Posted August 26, 200519 yr well i finally have some good news to share with everyone! casper had a series of gram stain tests done and all were sent to a specialist lab for testing as my vet wanted him to be screened for megabacteria and some other types of fungus/bacteria. well the results came in today and Casper has a CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH! hooray! we thought it would have been extremely likely that Casper would contract meagabateriosis (that peanut died of) as they frequently fed eachother. but he does not have megabacteria and has healthy levels of naturally occuring bacteria. he hasnt been eating because he is mourning Peanut and is a little bit sad, so we just have to keep an eye on him for the time being. i am amazed. i really thought he would have it too. its not really known why in this case it wasnt pathogenic (sp?), but i am so happy. maybe some day Casper can have a new budgie friend too, as from what i have researched and from what i have been told by the vet, it is rare for polyomavirus to spread between adult budgies over the age of 6 months. so theres anothe rbit of good news.
August 26, 200519 yr Your news has given me a much needed lift! I am so delighted for you, and Casper I know what a tremendous relief this must be, thanks for sharing the good news!!!!!!!
August 26, 200519 yr i get the feeling me and casper are going to have a very good relationship, he came and perched on my shoulder watching animal park with me and was preening my hair for me he also loves to snuggle in my neck and likes it when i gently rub my cheek against his feathers. he does bite though, quite visiously, but only with hands. he has learnt that hands bring medicine and crop tubes! we will have to work on that one. (Laughing out loud)!
August 26, 200519 yr i have to go back to work on tuesday though boooo! then he wont get such a fuss made of him. i hope he'll be okay left on his own during the day, with only his little radio for company

August 26, 200519 yr I guess budgies are also more or less like human? If their antibodies are strong enough, they don't contract diseases? Just assuming though. Good for you Pixie. What is polyoma/polygoma by the way?
August 26, 200519 yr it is very similar to PBFD. it is an immuno suppressive disorder that is passed on to budgies through an infected or carrier budgie when they are very young. if budgies contract it before they are weaned it is fatal. breeders call polyomavirus 'french moult'. this is an old topic that a posted when i first found out he had the condition. have a flick through if you'd like, its quite long as i explained all the medical info that i found out along the way. peanuts story
