Posted August 24, 200519 yr How to put this nicely...forget it..my budgies have started eating their poo when they are out. Their playgym under the perches collects it and they go down there and chow down. It is sooooo gross! I have had budgies all my life and have never seen this. Is this normal? What can I do? I put treats there thinking they would prefer that but they still go there. I will try keeping it super-clean and shooing them off when I catch them. Why would they do this? They are not cecotropes (sp?-like in rabbits).
August 24, 200519 yr I have read somewhere that its not healthy for budgies to eat their poo. The thing is, mine does it too sometimes whether in the cage or out playing but very seldom. I am able to divert her attention easily by giving her treats. Your case is very special though I am not sure why. Maybe someone else could answer that
August 24, 200519 yr Peekaboo picks at anything small and round (be it a crumb, fuzzie, or seed) whenever she's out of her cage, and a lot of time she ends up picking up her own poo, too. However, she doesn't eat it, merely moves it around in her mouth a bit before returning it to where it belongs... on the floor (Laughing out loud)!
August 25, 200519 yr It could be that your budgies are lacking in a nutrient or vitamin or something. If theyve only recently started doing this, I would ask your vet for a good suppliment, like ACEhigh, and sprinkle a bit on there food each morning.
August 26, 200519 yr Thanks guys. I think they are actually just picking at their poo, not eating it. They get a multivitamin as well as have a balanced diet so I don't think they are missing anything. They really like to pick at anything. They are beak happy
