Posted August 22, 200519 yr hi!!!...i've got two budgies and my husband just bought me an aviary for my birthday... i want to start breeding them, as i used to when i was a kid...for the sheer wonder of watching the courting between a pair flirting with the prospect of a brood, peeking into a nesting box early in the morning and seeing those little pink shapes staggering around chirping...and entering the avairy to the whoosh of scores of budgies taking flight... ...but...(likre life) its far more complicated now.... :wine i've bought a couple of books with photos of all sorts of magnificent budgies....but i'm afraid i can't (reliably) tell the difference between a spangles, clearwing, opaline, danish pied, recessive, dominant....etc etc....and the genetics of it all escapes me still more...one of my treasured memories of breeding budgies as a kid was the anticipation of what the babies of a pair who chose each other, may be like, in both plumage and personality am i blind?...or thick?.......is there a website or a book or something that can help me? look forward to hearing from someone...anyone!! jenny
August 22, 200519 yr There is plenty of help on here :wine Head down the forum to here: http://www.daves-forums.co.uk/bbc/index.php?showforum=83 that has heaps of pictures and answer to what the budgie is.
August 22, 200519 yr Oh nerwen you have sent her into a head spin... Welcome and good luck Jenny, I do agree with nerwen you will learn lots here, with a few head spins if you don't mind..
August 22, 200519 yr yeah I thought of that afterwards Lin. Maybe I should add a note, "only read answers posted by Pass" If you can it may be easier to post pictures of your two little ones and the ones that know this sort of jazz can tell you what they are then that will give you a place to start.

August 22, 200519 yr There are heaps of websites showing colours and talking about genetic but none that have stood out in my mind to recall. You can try a google sreach for budgie colours or something like that. What do you mean by differant? differant to the other bird? Is it lighter in colour more grey? Or does it look like the colours are swaped around? edit- This place might help http://www.budgiebreeders.asn.au/budgie%20pics.htm and bea has a website which a lot of pics telling you what colour her birds are. (hope she posts cause I don't remember the address for it) Edited August 22, 200519 yr by nerwen

August 23, 200519 yr Generally speaking, if you pair a green bird to a blue one, unless the green bird is split for blue (carries a blue gene) the babies will all be green, as green is a dominant color. You need to have some idea of what colors you want to get in order to know what colors to buy. Do you want blues or greens? Do you want more pieds? Do you want recessives?
