Eaten eggs

Hi,I was recently given a pair of budgies with a nest. These birds hadn't breed before as far as I was told(at least 3yrs).Within a month we had started to see the hen going in the nest a lot and in a couple of weeks had 4 eggs.Everthing went well and all hatched,I gave three away and left the youngest with the parents. Before we new it she lay 6 more eggs,I kept an eye on the baby and never saw it trying to go back to nest so thought it might be okay to leave it there.Hen never seems to be out of nest and it looked like all was well. Then on checking on eggs descovered a hatchling dead in corner of nest,I removed it straight away and hen continued to stay with other eggs. Two days later saw an egg on floor of cage which had been pecked open with no sign of baby,I checked nest to find all other eggs had vanished(eaten ?).If you could let me know how to help in preventing this again it would be most appreciated.

Yours faithfully,B.B.B=Biwildered Bubgie Breeder

You might have bred your budgie too often. Read some posts in this forum on breeding topic. I think it will help you.

It could have beent he mother eating the eggs, or the baby that you left in there or even the farther if you didn't see them being eaten then you can't really guess at which bird did the deed.

I would suggest you remove the nest box and let them all have a rest for at lest 6 month but a year is better. Then if you want to try again have only the hen and cock in the cage together. If the hen is 3 now then next time should be her last time to breed, since over the age of four isn't good for a hen.
