Posted August 20, 200520 yr Sarg has a wound on his head. I have caught him and Frosty having a few fistycuffs lately but nothing serious. When I looked in on them this morning I noticed Sarg's head was bleeding a little bit so I took him out and cleaned him up. But when I put him back Frosty went straight over and went for him again! After tapping Frosty on the beak I again took Sarg out and I've now put him my smaller breeding cage, his head has stopped bleeding but it seems to be coming from his newly growing pin feathers. So.... I have a few questions for all you intelligent people... 1) Why would Frosty suddenly turn on Sarg when overall they get on quite well? 2) Will his pin feathers growing on top of his head keep re-opening the wound? 3) Why would the biggest bird in the cage be the one that gets picked on? I have called my vet and she is going to pop in on us tomorrow morning. Just wondered what your advice would be? Actually, now that he has calmed down and let me have a good look, it seems that its his actual pin feathers that were bleeding as they have clotted on the ends. He has settled now and gone back to eating and singing in his little cage. Any ideas?
August 20, 200520 yr Oh dear-poor Sarg. It is quite normal for a bird to suddenly do that to another one-hormones etc. Little bits of blood on top can be o.k. on their own as long as you watch for infection. I would imagine if it was caused by a nasty stab on the head that the pin feathers shouldn't bother it too much,as long as it has stopped bleeding now. Cornflour can stem bleeding by the way. I don't think size matters too much to budgies,it's the personality that can sometimes determine who is on top of the pecking order. Hope all is well after the vet visit. Julie
August 20, 200520 yr Thank you Julie, look like Frosty might have hit the "terrible teens" then. I will let you know what the vet says after her visit.
August 20, 200520 yr Thanks budge, he chirped a thankyou! He isnt impressed at being in the little cage by himself but he seems to be doing okay. Im probably going a bit overboard by ringing my vet but as she's one of my oldest friends she doesnt mind checking on him for me
August 20, 200520 yr We all know you can't be too careful with these little guys - they hide problems too well. Better safe than sorry. Hope all goes well
August 21, 200520 yr okay - UPDATE Simone (vet) has been round this morning and checked Sarg out for me. She said that he is doing fine and to keep him in his own little cage for a while and inrtoduce him slowly back as if he's a new budgie all over again. This is all well and good, but with him in the smaller cage he gets more attention and ends up out a LOT more. The only problem with that is I dont get to eat in peace!! I have to share it with him cos if I dont he pinches what he fancies anyway!
August 21, 200520 yr Oh that is good news. Just make sure that you put budgie friendly foods on your plate - good for both of you! (Laughing out loud)
August 31, 200519 yr Quick update - Sarg is back in the big cage with the rest of the brood and is doing well. Frosty seems to be leaving him alone now so maybe it was just little tiff that got out of hand, will be keepng an eye on them though just in case
