Posted August 18, 200519 yr She's laid an egg in one but still goes in to the other two (there's three) - this has never happened before. The egg is now two days old so I'm not sure it's good anymore...but still, why is she doing this? Anyone ever had an indecisive budgie like this? She's around 5 yrs old so she's not brand new...although this would be her first clutch. (is she too old, maybe?) I forget how old is too old for a budgie... Ideas, please?
August 18, 200519 yr I would not breed her at 5 years old, especially it being her first clutch! That is just my opinion. I am sure that other breeders will give you info too. How many other birds have you got? If you are not breeding others take the nesting boxes out. 4 years is old enough.
August 19, 200519 yr I have six budgies, three boys and three girls. She's playing a Demi b/c she caught up with the youngest male. :yellowhead: Anyway, she wont let the other two go into boxes either b/c she monopolizes all there. :redalbino:
August 20, 200519 yr 5 years old for a first clutch is too old. I'd say you might have to remove her and put her in a retirement cage so that the other hens can bree, then you might have to buy another hen to even up the male/female ratio.

Take her mate too, if your not going to get a new hen for him. Hows it all going? Keep us posted.
August 22, 200519 yr well, I was going to remove her and wouldnt you konw it, she laid two eggs in the "final" choice box and now is brooding... :excl: Do I let her have her clutch? they could be infertile....I dont remember if budgies just stop laying if I move her or if she's going to keep laying like I hear cockatiels do to replace the eggs I take...?

We'll just have to wait & see. Has she stopped picking on the others?
August 22, 200519 yr If she starts to fight with the other hens when they chooes a nest box I would still take her out.. Make sure she has settled and is not going to attack the other hens! Good luck and keep us posted.
August 24, 200519 yr t hank you all! yes she's settled for the moment but I think the other hens are still freaked b/c they wont chose a box still... Anyway thanks!
