okay so im going to paint the bird box/house for my birds.... what type of paint is needed... obviously something no toxic to birds... led free... glossy for easy cleaning and...................... anything else i'm missing out on.... ??? reccommend any types in particular????

I don't know much about paint. Wouldn't it be easier if you don't paint it? :o eheh..lazy bum talking.

I personally wouldn't paint it either... Is there a safe paint to use for things birds might chew on?

Personally, I think it would be cool if you could use a wood burner and burn a design into it... depending on how artistic you are... wait, who is our resident artist again?

okay, so I'm way out there. Like this should be news.

i wouldnt use gloss. gloss paints are oil based and so could be toxic. they can also be very sticky if they are painted onto certain surfaces.

i would go for a pet safe emulsion. the pet safe ones have a picture of a dog on usually, i think. pet safe paints may also be wipe clean.

if you do decide to paint, look at the ingredients and look for natural dyes and water based qualities. if in doubt after your research i would just leave it how it is to be honest with you.

used gloss paint now for over 10 years in flights and breeding cages it is safe

well i do want to paint it cause i like pretty things... i could just not paint the insides... thats lowers any risks a fare ammount !

but thanks for the replys ! i know what i need now

how long do you have to leave it before it is safe for your birds (I'm thinking of the fumes)

i dont know.. it will have exactly 6 days to dry and rid the smell ! hope thats long enough !

can you get water based gloss paint these days? i would imagine that would be safe.

im not certain i know years ago you had to watch out for lead based paints but these were banned i think many years ago

i just looked it up and your right a lot of the older gloss paints are oil or solvent based, but these days water based gloss paint is readily available in most large chain diy stores :yellowhead: gloss is very easy to clean so i think it is the best of both worlds if you can get it.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !!!

much appreciated information.

going to go buy paint now !

along with many other bird things... YAY

remember to read the tin before you buy! i still dont think ALL gloss paint is water based. :D

Hi. I use something for cages called Japlac - it is non-toxic paint used for childrens toys and two coats will 'seal' well enough to protect and make items easier for cleaning.

(I had to ask where it was though as I couldn't find it...) :P

That's a great idea! How long do I have to move my birds out for if I paint my ceiling (just noticed the biggest crack ever, have to patch and paint now)

I use Silk Gloss Emulsion.
