Renal Tumour....

Featured Replies

After my other posts of how Percy (blue budgie) previously diagnosed with liver damage and has since young (he's 3.5 yrs old now) had green/white/grey, soft/hard/watery droppings and had gut infection et al, I took him to another avian vet today! Percy has been constipated and straining to go lately and I felt that he had a small lump in his belly and this vet said "Yes it's a mass, possibly a renal tumour". I'm devastated, although I knew that Percy hasn't been 100% with health, he's always lively, chirping, talking lots, very affectionate, NEVER bites.. understands what you say.. I'd never have believed how intelligent these lovely birds are!

The vet has given him anti inflammation drops (meant for dogs it says on the packet..eeek) and I'm giving him a drop or two of Lactulose to help with the constipation, tho the vet thinks the straining is because of the tumour, also the tail bobbing due to it pressing on the lower air sacs and maybe the dropping problems too but can be caused by the liver damage.

The vet said he would x-ray Percy to establish what the tumour is, how large et al and I think I should get this done, but does anyone have any experience of what the birds go through and if the prognosis is as bad as I think it's gonna be?

If anyone can give me some thoughts on the matter please I'd be very appreciative. I am so upset over this news. Thank you for ur help. :)

I have no experience with this, how very sad though. I hope everything works out okay :)

Keep us posted!

He could still live for ages yet, don't give up on the little fellow. If the treatment you're giving him works, then you may still have him for years yet! My vets said that birds with tumours can still allow them to live for years without too much of a problem and regular treatment and a good diet helps this.

Thinking of you.

oh dear :) but dont give up on him yet.

the only way to know for sure that its a tumour is for some tests to be done? it could be a lipoma, which budgies are prone to, and sometimes budgies can live a long long time with them. lipomas are made of fatty cells and can be controlled to a certain extent by reducing seeds in the diet and increasing fruit and veg in the diet and extra flight time. it helps to reduce the rate of growth of the lump. i dont have any experience of vet medicine, this is only what i have found out myself through searching the net.

one of my budgies has a large lump that needs to be removed. and i know its not nice. but there is always some hope. if the lump is small and stable your vet might say that treatment isnt necessary after the infection has cleared. if it does need to be removed of course there are risks. i know what your going through.

hope he feels better soon, please keep us updated on his progress.

I'm sorry to hear about your budgie pixie, that's awful.... I hope all goes well for him/her. I'm taking Percy to the vet today for the x-ray... dreading leaving him there even if for a few hours :-( should of course know more later.... he isn't poohing properly tho never has done but not such much urine now.... and very little pooh anyway. The vet thinks the tumour is pressing inside to impede things.. we shall see.

Thanks for all your words of encouragement, I will keep you posted. xx

I hope something can be done to help Percy.

gook luck with everything, i really hope everything turns out for the best.

get well wishes x

Update:

Thanks for all ur good wishes it's very much appreciated. Percy had the x-ray came thru well. It's not a renal tumour thankfully, but he does have an enlarged liver (blood tests last yr revealed he had liver damage), but the vet not 100% sure why or if there are other probs with liver... so he has given Percy antibiotics and I will have to phone vet next week to tell him how Percy has got on. Not sure wot we do from here, cept to try and change his diet as he really only eats seed. I persevere with veg and fruit and sometimes he has a little but not often, the vet gave me some parrot pellets that I am to crush and put on Percy's food.. so started that today. Still not sure where we go as Percy isn't doing his droppings properly nor that many come to think of it.. so may still have to have other tests. Will let you all know and thanks for your thoughts.... it really helps. XX

im glad things have gone better than was originally thought!

diet can really make a difference with liver problems. check out the food and nutrition forum for lots of great ideas. there are literally loads of different things your budgie can try.

have you tried eating a peice of carrot or pretending to eat broccoli or spinach leaves in front of him? most lone budgies will go for something if they see you eating it first, cuz then they know its safe :P

get well soon percy.
