Posted August 16, 200520 yr Hi all I have an 8 month old budgie who is very sick, and I really really don't want to loose him... he has been sick for about 4 days now, i have taken him to the vet and she gave me some antibiotics to give him once a day, he's had two lots. Don't think it is really helping... he is skinny and isn't really interested in food, today i have started to hand feed him. he is fluffed up all the time and sleeps on the bottom of the cage, his poohs are black in colour, his breathing is shallow.. he's not active, he doesn't chirp.... i'm thinking he may have eaten something he shouldn't have... or maybe just something wrong with his stomach... it is really making me sad to see him sick. can anyone suggest what is wrong?? or what else to do with him... any help would be appreciated. thanks abi
August 16, 200520 yr there isnt really much we can say except do as the vet has said and try to keep him as comfortable as possible. its never easy seeing a pet suffer. perhaps peg some of his favourite foods near to the perches where he sleeps to try and enourage him to have a nibble of something. a piece of broccoli? whatever he likes best. keep a close eye on him and if you see that he seems to be getting worse, take him back to the vets asap and explain to them your concerns. sometimes they will suggest a higher dosage, sometimes they will suggest an alternative antibiotic if the one you have now isnt having the desired affect. keep him nice and warm, make sure there isnt a draft. i hope he starts to get better soon, love pix
August 17, 200520 yr Keep him as warm as you can and as quiet as possible. Make sure there is seed and water on the floor of the cage so he can get to it in case he doesn't have the energy to perch up high to get to the food. What medicine did the vet give you? Maybe you need to see about taking him back in, or giving the medicine twince a day instead of once? I'm sure they won't mind a phone call if you're really concerned. Healing vibes to your little one.
August 17, 200520 yr keep your budgie warm and quiet. keep water and food on the floor next to them. Try him with a little bit of honey on a spoon.
August 17, 200520 yr I add as the same as above me but might add when they stay 'warm' the mean WARM. Get a bed lamp and shine it into his cage as cose as you can, the temp would be great close to 35 c to 40 c. A sick bird needs the warmth so it can then but the effort of gett ing better not trying to stay warm. Did the vet check the exrment? Was it black when the vet saw him or has that changed? IF it's changed then 'at LEAST' you need to call them and tell them that. If you have millet then offer him that or a fave treat just to try and get him to eat something.
August 17, 200520 yr Hi Nerwen, Sunshine died during the night ( I deffinately kept him warm, he was next to a heater (not too close though). No the vet didn't check his pooh, it started off as kinda runny then it was normal solid looking and black in colour, he would eat here and there but obviously not enough as when i picked him up this morning he was skin and bones... I've been searching on the net to find out what caused him to get sick and die so quickly but i haven't been able to find anything really. I an avian vet would know right?? Can't believe a week ago he was fine and now he's gone...
August 17, 200520 yr Oh dear Abi-so sorry. A vet would possibly be able to do a fecal test to see what has happened if you can save some? Julie
August 17, 200520 yr oh no, i am so sorry abi. you did everything you could for him. julie is right, if you would like to know more, take a sample of poo (as fresh as possible) with you to an avian vet and ask them if they could find out for you. hopefully you will find the answers you are looking for.
