Posted August 13, 200520 yr I have been worried about dolly the last few months, he sleeps way too much. Today he slept 75% of day at least, with his head tucked in. He preened for about 10minutes... had some millet and a drink from the bath when I put it out. II put him with the new budgie to perk him up (I know I know, but worry about Dolly right now not that okay) She was interested, and he slept! Now I just noticed this: Is this throwup? This has been his shape all day: His poop is all backed up at his bum, and the last weeks the urine has been yellowish. Please Help!
August 13, 200520 yr I think its a good idea you bring him to a vet for a check? If his poop is sticking to the vent, that is a sign of illness especially if he has been sleeping 75% of the day. Did you quarantine the new budgie?
August 13, 200520 yr All that = Avian VET. To save you some trouble in the future, if your budgie shows sign of illness, take him/her to the vet. We can't do anything except type out "take him to the vet." Even if we knew the cause we couldn't treat it. Bottom line... sick budgies need vets! It doesn't sound good, the symptoms you listed could mean a number of different things. (In fact, MOST symptoms can mean a number of differnt things which is why we can't really help other than telling you to keep the bird comfy and get him seen by an avian vet.) Also, such obvious signs mean this should be treated as an emergency. Every minute counts. Edited August 13, 200520 yr by eterri
August 13, 200520 yr It could be throw up, usually it pastes their head feathers, but depending upon how he was flinging it out it could have landed on his chest. The fluffing up and leaning forward I am familiar with, as mine have done that before when they were ill. Sometimes they will sit even flatter and further forward. I'm sure budgies sit like that for other reasons too, but if you are looking for confirmation, yes that posture is not how a healthy budgie sits. It reminds me of a stomachache. The yellowy urates can be caused by different things too. Ruling out dietary reasons, they also point towards a vet trip. zoeandkiwi, please call the vet. Please? And please resize your photos, they are too much over adam's specs. If you resize on photobucket they may automatically resize on here too, since it is just a link. If not, I will have to delete them and they will need to be reposted.
August 14, 200520 yr okay I just got back from the vet. Dolly is very very sick. Im trying not to cry... He could be okay and he could not be. He had to have three injections (zoloft, baytrill, and drip fluid) as well as deworming by mouth. He has to go back on monday for all of that again. I did not even see all his symptoms. I knew he slept too much, his droppings stuck, and he threw up... The vet found blood in the droppings. Dolly has also weighed 27grams since the day he came home, he is only 23.5g He could have worms, parasite, liver disease, or cancer. Some treatable.. some not. If he has cancer, the vet said he would just keep going downhill. Please keep your fingers crossed for Dolly, Lets hope its one of the ailments that we can fix. Thankfully, my sister comes home tomoro, so he wont have to be alone while im at work. Also he is aloud to stay in the same room as the other budgies, but not in contact with them.
August 14, 200520 yr Potter, She had a three week Quaranteen. I was so worried that Dolly was suffering from depresion, that I broke Quaranteen to try and cheer him up. He just slept while she tried to get his attention, thats when I started to really worry and then I noticed the vomit. I know I should not have broken Quaranteen, it was a stupid mistake. I could have passed Dolly's ailments on to her or she could have... She is very healthy so far, good droppings, clear eyes, playfull and energetic. Right now all the birds are in my room. Dolly is out of his cage and sleeping under a heat lamp. Zoe and Kiwi's cage is in another corner. Then I have newbee in a different corner. Dolly is the only one out of his cage, he just had a traumatic moment and I want to make him as comfortable as possible. He is sleeping under the lamp right now. (Is sleeping like it is for humans... we need sleep to get better). Zoe, Kiwi, and Newbee are going nuts at each other though. Can I just let her go over and visit them? She is already in the same room. Dolly is aloud in here with us. The vet said that some of the ailments are contages and some are not. The ones that are, need to be transfered by contact. As in my budgies would need to get some of his droppings into their digestive tract. He said they are fine in the same room, as long as I wash my hands inbetween holdings, and have them seperate. he said it would also be better for dolly, so he does not think his whole world is collapsing.
August 14, 200520 yr I'm really sorry about the news. Did he run tests to rule out the more infectious diseases? Some are airborn and could indeed infect your other birds so please be very careful. I'll be thinking of you and your budgie and I hope he makes a full recovery and the cause is pinpointed soon. Out of curiosity, what is the zoloft supposed to do? I've never heard of it being given to birds as it's a human anti-depressant. Edited August 14, 200520 yr by eterri
August 14, 200520 yr The vet said that he has a gstronomical upset. oh oups! I meant Zantact. Dolly has quite a few syptoms, so the vet was able to diagnose him. He had bloody droppings, weight loss, dehydration, and vomiting. Before when I took Dolly to the vet for sleeping too much... thats all we had to go on... so the only options would have bin to do blood tests to find out more. But this time Dolly had a whole bunch of related symptoms. His treatments were all for different things, and the ones that were not treated for... like cancer... cant be fixed. Zantact- Treat stomach acids and upset stomach (ulcer possibilities) Baytill Deworming Fluids- For rehydration This is why he was able to tell me that they are not airborn. He is a good vet, and Avian Certified. Edited August 14, 200520 yr by zoeandkiwi
August 14, 200520 yr Poor Dolly and poor you too. At least the vet was able to give you some hope that Dolly can become healthy again. Cancer or tumors you may not be able to do much about, but even liver disease can be slowed or reversed by diet and medications. The liver is the only organ that has the ability to regenerate itself in people, I think the same holds true for birds and other animals too. Worms or parasites you know can be taken care of. Try to stay optimistic, and please let us know what happens when you go back to the vet on Monday.
August 14, 200520 yr Thanks everyone! There has been no improvement yet. I just got him up from bed, and he was awake about 30secs.... now he is fast asleep again. His mommy will be home this afternoon so hopefully that will help some, she has been gone a month.
August 14, 200520 yr Baytril is a miracle drug for birds. I had three very sick birds and the vet prescribed baytril. I had to give it for three trial lengths but all birds are now well and happy. Good luck!
August 15, 200520 yr Baytrill is fairly broad spectrum, but yup love the stuff. Gonna make sure we always have some on hand now for miss sickypants. It made her better in two days. Well enough that would could get her more meds. Good luck with Dolly.
August 17, 200520 yr Dolly is doing a little bit better today. He had another trip to the vets last night, and he will go again tomoro morning. He is eating more now, and he gets up a little more but still sleeps most of the day. He still sometime has black droppings. Tomoro, I would like to discuss getting some baytrill to give to dolly orally at home. Currently he has been getting shots, and I dont like this Plus I have to stress him out and take him to the vets. What do you think of this idea?
August 17, 200520 yr That is a good idea. My girl got Vit D injections, and had Baytrill ones too, but they also gave us Baytrill to give orally. She had a reaction to the last lot of injections, so has to be on water based medication for a while now... The oral stuff is worth a try, I found the more stressed my bird was the longer it took for her to heal. Now she loves the vets
August 20, 200520 yr Dolly passed away earlyer this evening. I was there for him till the end, and he passed away in my hands. Im glad he is no longer suffering, but I miss him a lot! He will have a special place in our hearts forever!
August 20, 200520 yr I'm so sorry to hear this. I really thought he was on the mend. You did all you could and he's in a better place now.
