Posted August 13, 200520 yr Hi, I have a friend who is having a nightmare on another site I visit. She has a 6mth old budgie who appears to have been in a fight with an adult. The result is that although alive the poor bird has lost most of its beak especially the bottom one in the process. It has been suggested that she go to the vet and try soft food or pellets. She says her bird doesn't like pellets and the Kaytee exact that was mentioned is apparently not available for at least a week, it will have to be ordered in by her own pet shop. Can any one recommend a soft diet or baby diet that she could make up and feed to her her bird in the interim? Anyone had this problem before? Any advise as to length of time it will take for beak to regrow, or infact if it will? Any stories of a budgie surviving without a functional beak? Any help gratefully received. From Karen
August 13, 200520 yr I've had no experience of this but I would suggest boiled egg with grated carrot? Cede egg food mix? Julie
August 13, 200520 yr An immediate trip to the vet is in order. I can't imagine how much pain that bird is in.
August 13, 200520 yr it has been SUGGESTED????? You mean that bird HASNT been rushed to the vet already??? I make No appologies if my response seems harsh, that bird should have been under veterinary crae before you had time to type this post! Is cost a problem??? I dont care!!!!! has she fot a tv/music centre/video/dvd palyer??? Tell her to SELL them if needs be to protect and care for her bird! My anger at this is because I SEE the results of 'cant afford vet care, its not needed, its just a bird' day in and day out. If your friend is in UK, I would pay for transport of said bird to me, and from then on, pay all vets fees in order to give this poor, poor innocent bird the care that it is ENTITLED to. Does your friend know that a birds beak is approximately 15 times more sensitive to pain than the human eyeball? I am furious and distressed that this bird isnt already under deep and intensive veterinary treatment. However, if your friend woul like genuine like help and guidance tell her/him to email me at chirpy001@hotmail.com Im not happy with what I have read, but hey, none of us are perfect. I will try and help if I can. Im angry that this has even come to post at this stage, BUT Im glad it has. The bird needs help, the friend needs guidance. Dont disappear please, we need to know whats going on. We want to help. Anne
August 13, 200520 yr *points upwards* What Chirpy said. I realize this is your friend's bird so I think the best thing you can do is explain to her (or yell at her or shake her senseless) just how important it is that she take the budgie to a vet. And if she doesn't or can't, it's time to rehome the bird to someone who will have it seen. Also, let her know that even if the bird doesn't SEEM to be in a great deal of pain, he is. They are masters at disguising pain or illness or weakness. Oh, and I'm assuming she's separated the bird from the others? If not, it needs to be done now. Edited August 13, 200520 yr by eterri
August 14, 200520 yr Thank you or your concerns. The budgie is still okay, she lives in USA and the owner in question is someone I have got to know on another budgie site. I have passed on all your concerns (which has already been advised to her) and will keep you posted. From Karen :angel1:
August 16, 200520 yr Thankyou Karen for trying to help this bird, and trying to guide its owner. Anne
