I would like to help the budgie popuation to grow.

Dont worry I have no pesky, easy to irratate neighbors. :D

The answer to this really depends on how much you know about breeding at the moment, what your finances are, what your future plans for the babies are etc .re housing, new homes, vets bills etc?

Julie

Congratulations on your life changing decision. If you are committed and stay that way you will enjoy many heartfelt and joyous times, but as with anything there are the sad times too. Before you start gather as much info you can, its really important that you do cause it will make the whole expierience that much better and easier, also if you do the research, the purists here will respect you and be more willing to offer valuable advice (Laughing out loud). But seriously if it's what you wan't to do go for it keeping budgies is just wonderful, I love it. So put a little effort in and you'll be just fine. First hit the libraries or net for books on breeding budgies and read, read, read. Most books will have chapters on "getting started" hence it being the best place to start

I would love to read updates on how you go, what've learnt, what direction of breeding you have chosen as well as type so please keep us posted.

Good Luck

P.S Asks lots and lots of questions

Please don't take offense to what I'm about to say because it is not at all personal and I'm not trying to start an argument or be mean. I'm just going to point out some things and maybe you can correct me or give me a clearer picture of what you mean. :D

You say you want to breed because your sister's friend's sister lost her two budgies and you want to help her? I'm assuming you mean help her as in give her more budgies? How about helping budgies and point her to a rescue or a reputable breeder? Maybe there is someone in your town who is looking for a new home for their budgies? When dealing with animals, always put the animals first, not the people. What happened to her budgies?

You say that you would like to experience what Bea and Scoobery are. I'm with you on that one, I would love it too. But again, the budgies come first, not what you want. This is one reason why I'm not breeding right now as much as I would absolutely love to get into it. And keep in mind that bad things happened too. I'd love to experience the good but maybe you should take a look at Imotive's thread on baby budgies with irregular beaks. Granted, he hasn't taken them to the vet yet but when (and if) he does, it's not going to be cheap to correct the problem but it is his responsibility to do so. Can you afford medical care for all of the budgies?

You also said that you would like to help the budgie population grow. I assure you that is probably the worst reason to breed. Budgies have absolutely no trouble reproducing and they aren't going anywhere anytime soon. What a good breeder can do is add healthier, stronger, hardier budgies with awesome temperments to help improve our pet birds. Breeding for these things is very very difficult. Breeding for numbers is easy but it is also at the bird's expense. Believe me, there are plenty of budgies and adding to the population isn't helpful in any way unless you're adding some top-quality birds. And by top quality I don't mean pretty colors or birds that meet show standards.

Not to mention, there are many many budgies lingering in rescues. Adding to the population adds to that population as well.

Breeding looks wonderful and fun but as human beings we have a responsibility to animals. We can't be selfish with our wants, we have to put animals first since they can't make choices the same way that we can. And personally, I feel that since mankind has put budgies in such a mess it's only right that mankind fixes it.

Very good questions indeed I don't think Stimpy will take offence at all as she should be asking herself these questions when she starts her planning. Stimpy, it is important to breed for the right reasons.
