How many Budgies?

Featured Replies

Hello,

We have just burried Bobby. He has not been himself for some time. Lucy is now on her own. She has never been alone before. We have had them from babies 4 tears ago.

We have a fairly large flight cage and are thinking about introducing two new birds - we think it might be best if we go for two males.

We never clip our birds feathers and when we are in the cage is open.

We would love to hear from people who also keep more than two budgies in the same cage.

Thanks

Lynn

I had 3 budgies in one cage, they got along just fine! It may be a bit intimidating to your present budgie if you introduce 2 new budgies to her at once though..So, what I would do after quarantining the newbies, is to introduce her to one of them first, for maybe a few days, then introduce the next budgie. Be sure to have at least one water bowl for each budgie, and at least one seed cup for each budgie.

In the wild, the fly around in flocks of 100's, so with careful introduction there shouldn't be much trouble. Just watch cosely for any signs of bullying.

I agree with Chirpy and I'll even go as far as to say, why not just get one budgie for now? If you get two they may likely bond to each other while in quarantine and when introduced to your lonely budgie, someone's likely to become an outcast. When I had three budgies one of them was a bit on her own and it was really sad to see her try to bond with the other birds and be completely shunned. Sometimes it works, but what seems to work best is even numbers.

So, why not start with just getting one budgie since yours is so used to having only one other budgie with her? It's difficult to tame two birds at once. When you get the new bird (if you only get one) you can spend the 30 day quarantine time getting him tame and used to you. Then, when he's introduced to Lucy there's a much better chance that the two of them will bond.

Thanks to both of you for replying. You have given some very helpful advice.

They will if you put a nesting box in. Leave it out and they should get along fine. :(

Aye and the bigger the cage, the less they'll fight as each will have there own space.
