Posted August 8, 200520 yr i had a budgie 4 1/2 years and he died.i got 2 new ones they are about 8-10 weeks old.one of them is healthy the other one is sick. he has very watery droppings.and is a bit wobbly on his feet.i have taken him to the vet, they sent his droppings to a lab and they have come back normal.i don't know what else to try. i give him trill budgie food, grit, millet, charcole, vitamin drops in their water. what else can i do?i am taking him to another vet tomorrow but i am worried that they may not have the answer.if anyone can help i would be so grateful. emma
August 8, 200520 yr watery droppings can be a sign of many problems. if you take your bird to an avian vet they will be able to run a whole lot more tests than just faecal. it is your best chance of finding out what is wrong. you may be interested to know that budgies and other parrots do not need access to grit. they can digest their food fine without it. sick birds can often over eat grit and it can cause a whole load of complications. if you still want to offer grit, just keep an eye out and make sure he isnt eating it everyday. if he is remove it immediately. good luck and i hope he gets well soon.
August 8, 200520 yr thank you so much for the tip on grit i didn't know that i just listen to pet shops thank you i have taken it out. emma
August 8, 200520 yr thats okay other types of birds do need grit, but parrot species hull their seeds so they dont need it. i hope your little friend gets better soon. do you know if there are any avian vets in your area? i could try and help you find a list if you like.
August 8, 200520 yr i dont know of any,i am taking him to a vet maned eve in hatfield all i know is the vet i took him to told me about him but i don't know if he is a specialist.if you of a good one in north london i live in barnet.i really appreciate your help. emma
August 8, 200520 yr if your vet recommended another vet he is most likely a specialist. its worth giving them a ring and asking if there are any avian vets at that practice when you book though. Elizabeth Street Veterinary Clinic 55 Elizabeth Street London SW1 9PP 0207 730 9102 Streatham Hill Veterinary Surgery 101 Sternhold Avenue London SW2 4PF 0208 674 7342 Companion Care Vets 8A Joyce Dawson Way Thamesmead SE28 8RA 0208 311 5407 if no luck, try these. i dont know where they are in london but i found them on the harrisons website so i would have thought there would be an avian vet available at each of these practices. ring first to make sure though Edited August 8, 200520 yr by pixie25

August 9, 200520 yr Well done Pixie that was great advice. :glare: Emma, I hope all goes well with your budgie.
August 9, 200520 yr he is still a bit wobbly on his perch his droppings seem to be green.but he still looks unhealthy. i am taking him to the vet in an hour so hopefully i may know a bit more then. i will let you know.fingers crossed he will be o.k soon. emma
August 9, 200520 yr they said that he has an infection they gave me some powder to put in his water.it should take a week they said.they examined his droppings under a microscope and they said that there is no paracites.i just have to wait and see. i will keep you posted.thanks for your concern everyone.emma
August 10, 200520 yr i got the vet details off the harrisons website.he said he deals with alot of birds.the stuff he gave me was ornicure.he said dilute 0.5ml in 250ml of water and put it in the cage he said it shouldn't harm the other budgie and said if thesick one isn't drinking he gave me a dropper to give it to him myself.does this sound right. wasn't sure by your reply if you sounded unsure!!!! emma
August 10, 200520 yr Make sure your bird has no access to any other water while being medicated and change the water every day. That means no veggies for the duration. If he can get his liquid from veggies he will have no reason to drink the medicated water, and that won't do you any good. Especially if you don't know whether he's drinking or not. Did he show you how much to give orally if you have to do that?
August 10, 200520 yr thank you for your good tip.i wouldn't have known that about the vegies. he didn't show me how much to give him orally he just gave me the dropper i have given him a small amount each day (maybe a few drops do you think this is o.k?he has also had some off my finger. emma
August 10, 200520 yr Is the dropper marked off in cc's or something like that or is it just clear? A few drops doesn't sound like too much to me, but I'm not a vet, just a parrot owner like you. I'm not sure how medicines are dosed in the water, because you never know how much your bird will drink. Just to be sure, I think I'd call the vet's and ask what dosage to give if you are going to do it orally. That way you know for certain.
August 10, 200520 yr i have had another comment from pixie and she is concerned about the dosage in the water. i am just wondering if it is going to work o.k. he has already been ill for about 2 weeks now he has already had one lot of antibiotics by syringe but it didn't seem to cure him. i then took him to another vet who i was told was good with birds and what he advised was to put the powder in the water and i said to him wouldn't it be better if i gave it to him in a syringe he said yes and gave me a clear syringe. i am now dobting what he has said and i am not sure now if it will be enough to make him better. should i take him back to the 1st vet i went to?i have asked pixie the same thing what do you think??????? thank you emma

August 11, 200520 yr Adding medications to the water is not the best way to treat birds, BUT if they still drink the water they will get the medicine. The medication is dosed with a ratio of medicine to water based on the birds weight. Vets know budgies don't drink much, and that is factored into the dosage. The problem with dosing in the water is many birds won't drink as much when they are sick, or sometimes if the water looks, tastes, or smells "off" or "not normal" they will not drink it at all. Adding things to the water (even vitamins) also increases the rate at which bacteria will grow. It's not necessarily that they are stubborn, it's self-preservation. I'm sure you've noticed sometimes the bottom of the water dish is slightly slimy when you wash it out, due to poop, vitamins, medicine, seeds, whatever being in the water. Ideally, that should never grow in there. You rarely see it if the water you are changing still looks clean, or is only a few hours old. I change the water in my birds' cages at least twice a day, more if it is fouled. I would continue to dose the water until the medicine runs out. I would allow both birds access to it. Sometimes the bacteria is stubborn and will require more than one round of medicine. Mine have always been 10 - 14 days worth of medicine constitutes a round (this is for antifungals as well as antibiotics). If you've already given oral medicine for two weeks, a new medicine for another two weeks may kick the problem. It's possible the vet feels another two weeks of oral meds may be too much and so dosed the water instead. I don't know. I do know this is really worrying you so for your own peace of mind, call the vet back and ask lots of questions about the illness your bird has, the different methods of treatment, and what dosage to give orally if that is the way you feel better about getting medicine into your bird. Do an online search about whatever illness the vet told you your bird has. If you have a little knowledge before you call them back, you will be better able to ask the right questions. (((hugs)))
