1 minute sick & the next happy

Hi

We have two budgies; Indy and Jazz. Both are about 15 Months old. Indy has lived with us for a year and Jazz about 2 months now. Throughout Indy's life he is quite often sick (sitting on his perch, puffed up and literally throughing up).

I know he doesn't have a 'disease' as Jazz would no doubt have caught it by now, I never thought this to be the case anyway.

The curious thing though is that after an hour or thereabouts he's back to his normal cherpy mischevous self flying about the living room racing around with Jazz - with the sudden idea of coming down and preening me!. Some people have suggested that he regurgitates out of affection etc.. but I don't think this is the case - he just doesn't look right when he is being sick - it looks more seroius.

I have kept budgies for the majority of my life but have never come across this before. 80% of the time he's happy and frivolous. He gets on brilliantly with his new cage mate and they are totally inseperable.

I'm thinking he may have some sort of gentic digestive/stomach problem ??

Has anyone else heard of this ?? - If so any advise/help/suggestion(s) would be very welcome !

how long as your bird been this way for?

not all diseases are contagious, some avian diseases can affect only some birds in physical ways. other birds that have been in contact with the ill bird could act as carriers of the disease. so any new birds could possibly become infected with the disease your sick bird has/had. this is why it is very important to get some tests done and a diagnosis from an avian vet.

any bird that has been sick should see an avian vet as soon as possible. if you have left his illness for a very long time it could have become progressively worse and lessened his chances of a full recovery. reguritation is normal, but any bird that has been violently sick is definitely not healthy.

birds try extremely hard to hide their signs of illness, this is a natural instinct to avoid being picked off by predators.

hope this helps answer your question and you get things sorted out soon.

Thanks - any advise is greatly appreciated

I know that a birds natural defence against predators is to hide any illness it may have - it is just very weird that 1 minute Indy's okay and the next he isn't. I have had another budgie in the past year who died - she hid the illness she had very well at the pet store (very chatty, tame - showing a want 'to get involved') and it wasn't til 5 or 6 days later that she passed away- she progressively got worse and didn't partly recover at all - thats the thing that i can't get my head around !

anyway - I'm going to speak to a v good avian vet in my local area tomorrow - with any luck he'll be able to get Indy sorted out !

In the mean time - any other ideas / thoughts would be a good starting point

cheers

I shall try not to write a novel....

Back in about April, my little budgie got really sick. I didn't understand what had happened, one minute he was fine, the next he was on the floor of the cage and on deaths door. After a week at the vets and a *** of a lot of expensive treatment, by some miracle he survived, and has since survived another infection.

Looking back over the time he'd been with me, since December, I noticed a lot of symptoms, that if I had known would have made me think hang on, something is just not right. It can take months for illness to show. He was supposed to start moulting in about January, but by April he hadn't moulted at all and there was only evidence of pin feathers which where there for a month. We thought he was just slow, but in actual fact he was exceedingly ill. Before my little one got so sick he had to go to the vets, he'd sleep a lot and then wake up and be insane. He'd be fine one minute and not so good the next... It just depends how strong your bird is, mine just happens to be a little fighter.

It doesn't matter at all if your bird is fine one minute then sick and then fine again, the fact that it is sick at all is not good. At least take your bird to the vet for a check up, even if the vets don't find anything. It took over 3 months to realise something was up with my little bird.... You just don't know and theres no point second guessing. If you can afford it I would suggest you go to the vet.

I definately agree with TeGz. Better safe than sorry, these birds are amazing at hiding what is wrong with them

Please keep us updated on how he goes at the vet. :)

Please, oh please take him to the vet & have a faecal test done. I can't stress enough the importance of a quick diagnosis.

I waited too long and lost alot of birds (22) between Nov 03 & June 04. I will tell the whole story another time as it is heartbreaking :) and silly as it sounds, I still haven't gotten over it yet, but it taught me a valuable lesson - I don't know it all. :book:

Hi

Taking both Indy & Jazz to an excellent avian vet in my local area tomorrow afternoon - if anyone can help - he can !

Let you know the outcome.......

good luck :P

i hope its nothing serious. im so glad you are getting them the best possible care, your birds will thank you for it.

Cheers guys !

Hopefully after a vists to the avian specialist tomorrow - Indy will be okay - and as my youngest daughter says - back to 'bopping mode' (the nodding head thing that these adorable little birds do !)

Jazz will also have the once over while he is there.

As he doesn't stop shouting and squaking perhaps they may use a little parcel tape on his beak !

PS - I know the question I am about to ask should be put into another forum - but hey, I've started so I'll finish - looking at the picture of Indy and Jazz - any suggestions what variation Indy is ??

(Hopefully picture will appear below)

Darn - how do you add a picture to these postings ?????

join a host site. like photobucket (personally i find imageshack better). upload your pictures following the instructions that appear on the page. when you picture is uploaded it will show you a series of links you can use (thumbnails for forums, direct link to forums etc. copy the one you want to use.

some host sites allow you to resize the image first. make sure it is no larger than 450x450 pixels. if you are adding a thumbnail or ordinary link then dont worry about resizing.

then just paste the link into a post on this board :P the link should appear with before and after it.

This one is Indy chilling outside in our garden with us on a summers day last year

And this is the noisy one - Jazz (with Indy)! - he's a right character (in other words - nutter!), just hanging out on our ceiling fan (apparently the best possible toy in the world)

Nice piccies! I used to have a pair of budgie who loves to stand on the fan and make it move a little.I think it feels like merry-go-round to them! :(Laughing out loud):

Nice looking birds.

Please let us know how you get on at the Vets

Cindy

Good luck

Back from Vets with Indy - indications are some sort of Liver disorder - have antibiotics and a clip -winged bird now.

The vet said that he isn't on deaths door - but obviosuly isn't well - first thing to complete course of antibiotics, then if that doesn't work possible x-ray and endoscopy.

Could have been better news - but on the other side of the coin - could have been worse !

Meanwhile Indy may transpire to be an Indette ! and has taken the hump a little after being handled by someone he/she doesn't know.

Jazz meanwhile thinks the whole clipped wing thing is a great laugh ! - over and over stretching out his wings showing off to Indy.

glad he is going to be okay :) did the vet show you how to give the antibiotics by syringe? its a little tricky at first, and it is easier to have two people doing it. one holding the bird upright and one genlty prizing the beak open.

i hope the antibiotics work for him. keep us updated.

just out of interest...how come you only had one bird clipped? ^_^

Yeh thanks - showed me how to administer drugs + only had Indy clipped to help give him his medicine.

wouldn't normally have any bird clipped - but it was the vets advise to help give him drugs - There isn't anything wrong with Jazz - so left him as he was. In the vets own words about Jazz - 'Well there certainly isn't anything wrong with him!'

Oh well here's hoping he/she recovers soon and you can manage to get the medicine down him/her!

They look really sweet on your pics by the way.

Julie
