Posted August 5, 200519 yr I want to start to breed when it gets a little warmer. I have 2 pairs, one female is eight months old and her mate is over two years. And the other female is around about 5 to 6 months old (her mate being about a year old.) Ive heard you shouldnt breed budgies until they are at least 6 months old. Is this right? and if so, should I wait a few more months to breed the younger female? or would it be alright in a few weeks time? Ive bred before... but that was kind of accidental (Cleo -R.I.P.- layed her first clutch on the bottom of the cage) so Im still not certain as to what is right and wrong when it comes to preparing them for breeding. Any tips or advice would be appreciated! -Shann- xoxoxoxoxoxox Edited August 5, 200519 yr by Shann
August 5, 200519 yr You shouldn't breed until they are about 1 year old...some prefer to wait until 18 months. Any younger than that and they're not emotionally ready for the strain of raising a clutch and possibly won't know what to do with any babies that hatch.
August 5, 200519 yr Your hens are a bit young to be breeding yet, raising chicks takes a lot out of her so she really needs to be in top condition at least over a year. It sounds like your keen to breed soon so I would get an older hen in and let her bond with your two year old male, if you have them seperated from the others, and then they may breed for you in a few months time. Then next year your hens may be ready to breed. Get as much information as you can before you start and goodluck keep us posted
August 6, 200519 yr Please don't breed your 2 young hens, they are just babies. Do what Mr C has told you , but I think you need to do alot of reading before you start to breed.
August 6, 200519 yr The most important part of breeding is knowledge. It pays to be prepared. It does'nt take much effort but reading up on the do's and don'ts of breeding will save you alot of heartache. I started off in the local library it had plenty of books about budgies and is a great place to gain information, I'm sure you can find heaps on the web too.
