I'm having problems teaching him the step up thing. Whenever i get my hand near he hops to another perch. He wont even take food from me, any ideas?

try teaching him to step up on a piece of wood, or a small perch in your hand first. If you use the 'step up' command it shouldn't take too much after that to get him to use your finger. A couple of short sessions a day, rather than long ones, too.

He does it on the perch no probs . Are you actually meant to say "step up"? He's still very scared of my hand though. Won't even take millet from me. Just doesnt trust me.

Yep, use the words 'step up', and do it with a piece of wood or small perch you are holding in your hand. When he's used to that, you can try moving it with him on it. Eventually he should be okay with your hand, especially if you use a smaller piece of wood when he's comfortable, and gradually decrease.

okay, just a little update for you. Boris is one tame budgie

 

I decided to just let him out all day and stay in the same room. After a couple of weeks of flying around (i could always get him back in cage by using a stick) he realised i wasnt going to hurt him.

 

Then he just came to me. He sits on my shoulders, prunes my hair and nibbles on my ear. All quite annoying but rather funny (Laughing out loud). Jumps on my finger when ever i hold it out, and goes back to his cage on his own when he gets tired which is around 10pm.

 

I guess i got lucky with this bird huh?

nope (Laughing out loud). he seemed to just tame himself once he realised i wasn't going to hurt him. a trust thing i guess.
