Posted August 1, 200519 yr Please Help!! we have 5 budgies we keep indoors in a large cage, we put a nest box in and had 4 eggs The first one hatched, followed by another, the 2nd babe died, so we removed the body then today a 3rd egg has hatched but the eldest babe has died,(about 5 days old) This is our first ever batch of eggs
August 1, 200519 yr im not a breeder, i dont have any experience. but maybe it would be a good idea to call an avian vet who might be able to examine the body/bodies and find the cause of death. it could be a genetic problem or it could be an infection, if it is an infection or a deficiency there may be something you can do to try and stop it happening again. i hope the other chicks are okay

Good Luck. Harry.o0.

August 2, 200519 yr Hi Jenny So sorry to hear it. I would agree that is 1 of 2 things... either mom/dad are not feeding, which you can tell by the crop. Or another hen has attacked them. What are the sexes of your 5? You may have needed more nesting boxes? I hope you figure out the problem... how many babies are left?

We do have 2 nest boxes in the cage the other one has never been touched! We have 3 females and 2 males now plus one baby!! hopefully another one soon!!
August 2, 200519 yr it sounds to me like mom didnt know what to do. if she is spending more time in there now, ck to make sure the crop is nice & full. if not you will need to take over and hand feed. i had 1 baby die from 2 of my clutches, they were first time moms. they managed to figure it out and we have a total of 8 babies! good luck & keep us posted
August 3, 200519 yr Sorry to hear the bad news... You have 3 hens and only 2 boxes so that could be the prob. Make sure the other hens arn't getting into the nesting box when mum comes out to poo or just to have a rest. Some hens can be very agressive to any other young and the new mum. So be carefull good luck.
