Posted July 31, 200520 yr hello everyone! My budgie daffodill... :nest: when i was about to clean her cage out today, i noticed a fly on her back which then disappeared between her wings as i went to take a closer look, i then noticed another and squashed it and it looked like it had eggs! me and my friend took the budgie out of her cage and tried to take the other fly out from underneath her feathers and 5 minutes later managed to remove it. we killed the other fly and it seemed to also have eggs. Do you think the flies have layed eggs under her feathers? PLease help, i dont know what to do... should i take her to the vet?! i dont want her eaten by maggots! Please help my budgie! thanks
July 31, 200520 yr Are you positive they were common houseflies? If they were, I wouldn't worry about her being eaten by maggots... maggots only eat rotting things and leave live flesh alone. That's why they can be used in medicine to help fight gangrene.
July 31, 200520 yr Flies laying eggs under budgie feathers? I have never heard of that but do try to clean her feathers?
July 31, 200520 yr I've never heard about this happening before, the first thing I would do Is give her a bath!! And clean out the cage from top to bottom. Now if you are Really worried about her health take her to a vet. After all this is your bird and we can only help with what you tell us.
July 31, 200520 yr Take her to the vet! I know flies will lay eggs in the rear of rabbits, and it is a long and laborious (not to mention gross) job to get rid of them. You need to find the reason why this is happening. Is the cage dirty? Is the budgie not preening itself? Please take it to the vet
July 31, 200520 yr I was thinking could it be due to the warmer temperature under the feathers? Whatever it is, do clean her properly and bring her to the vet.

July 31, 200520 yr Don't know. On rabbits maggots can cover all the rear, back legs etc. if not treated. It usually affects rabbits that are unwell, and therefore not grooming properly. Don't know much more than that, as it has never happened to my rabbits, but it did happen to my parents elderly rabbit. Unfortunately it died before the maggots were eradicated. I don't think the maggots killed her, but they certainly didn't help!
August 1, 200520 yr That's due to feces, though... I can't think of a reason droppings would be on her wings. I do agree that it's a good idea to bathe her and call the vet, though.
August 10, 200520 yr Hey everyone! Thanks for the help. She really enjoys having a shower in the bathroom, Im giving her a shower every two days now since she likes it so much! the vet has looked at her and said that nothing seems wrong. Whenever I see a fly in the house I always chase it off fast! I saw some bird harnesses in the pet shop today and am wondering if they are any good, have any of you got one for your budgies? THANKS for the help  cheers!
