Posted July 31, 200519 yr My hen stopped laying on the 19th July. Her first baby has hatched and all is going well, she is doing a great job feeding him, and she is lively and moving around as usual. The only thing concerning me is that she appears to have a little egg bump near her rump, and her poo's are still really big. I was just wondering if it is normal for the hen to have this a while after she finishes laying, or should I be concerned that she might be eggbound? As I said, her behaviour is normal and she isn't showing any signs of distress, so I thought maybe this is just a normal thing for a hen to have after laying? Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What sort of bump are we talking about? Being lively is a good thing but maybe she needs a vet check. Have you felt her rump to make sure it is not an egg? Also the vet can rule out a rupture, and if it is a rupture don't breed her again. About her poo it will be big for a while because she is still sitting and staying in the nest for longer than normal, so she is still hanging on. She wouldn't be so lively and moving around like normal if she was eggbound. A vet check wouldn't hurt though. Good luck and keep us posted. Edited July 31, 200519 yr by Lady
July 31, 200519 yr Lady is right. She wouldn't be active if she is having an eggbound but do get her checked to make sure she is okay. Keep us updated however.
July 31, 200519 yr if she was egg bound this long its almost certain she would have died i think lady could be rite rupture or prolapse
August 1, 200519 yr if she was egg bound this long its almost certain she would have died i think lady could be rite rupture or prolapse <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks for the advice, I will check her out in the morning and if it is still there, I will take her to the vet. She still has 3 eggs to hatch out of the five, should I wait until they have hatched and take her, or take her straight away? I'm worried about the baby's getting cold and not fed
August 1, 200519 yr As I said, her behaviour is normal and she isn't showing any signs of distress, i think my actions would be to wait as you said she appears fine i would phone the vets and ask for advice over the phone
