Mite & Lice

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone~

My budgies seems to be scratching ,not sure how much is too much

and if they might have a bug problem

I tried the white sheet bit and found nothing on it the next morning..

I picked up this thing called ..

It's from a place called 8 in 1 anyways have any of you ever used this I sure would like to know if this is okay to use. Your input would be greatly appreciated

Mite & Lice Cage Protector- Protects birds from lice and mites, a common problem found in bird cages. Deodorizes cage as it protects.

it also doesn't say if it's okay to use on the baby budgies I have 2, 3 months olds

plus one almost 3 year old..

Thank You

KarynCandy

I know just what you're talking about and you should throw it away. It's not only useless, but can be harmful to your birds. Pet stores will sell anything.

eterri can you explain why please i dont think we get it in this country but other people might like to know why

As far as I know Hath, the cage protectors work by giving off fumes which can damage a birds respiratory and immune systems. Apparently the toxins in the fumes that are used to kill off the lice and mites are often highly poisonous to the bird who's cage is meant to be getting protected. Almost like using a fly spray near a bird.

Thanks chirpy! Yeah, I definitely should have elaborated, sorry about that. In my rush I just thought "mite protector= bad" then my brain went "okay, byebye now!"

But here's something that elaborates just a tad more on pet store products:

"Unfortunately, there is no regulatory agency overseeing products sold for pet birds. As a consequence, there are a number of items commonly sold in pet stores that can be harmful to your bird. We often see problems associated with sandpaper perches, grit, walnut shell or corncob bedding, and mite protectors. Sandpaper perch covers wear the skin off the bottom of birds' feet and create painful sores. Grit is unnecessary for parrots and can cause digestive problems. Mite protectors release toxins into your bird's environment and (despite their name) are ineffective against mites. Walnut shell and corncob bedding can grow bacteria and fungi that make your bird sick. When in doubt, ask your veterinarian before you purchase a new item. "

rite do you plug them in ?

i know some of the big breeders in this country have a sort of misting machine that you add f 10 to but i have never seen this which is good by the sounds of it

You just clip them to the side of the cage from what I've seen. My two cockatiels had them on their cages when I adopted them and I had to throw them away along with the grit and 80% sunflower seed mix they were eating.

also mite 'protectors' serve no real purpose, as a bird without mites does not need treatment. if in doubt that your bird has lice you should see a vet for the appropriate treatment. some treatments only need to be applied once by your vet to get rid of the problem. some take a little longer but your vet will always provide the best remedy. there are a whole range of sprays and such sold as bird 'health' products. i never intend on buying anything like that from a petshop.

one i will recomend is johnstons anti mite spray but only works if you disinfect the cage as well

Thank you for your reply..I will see if I can get the spray here..

where I live we don't have any vets that deal with birds..

makes it very hard for us bird lovers~

I be sure to do the cage and the floor and walls around..

Thanks RainbowI'll try to remember that.. :D

Since my birds spend a bit of time outside now is there anything specific I need to do for preventive maintenance, while we're on the subject?
