Broken Blood feathers...

Featured Replies

Sunshine did it again.... and this one really bled. Freaked me out... but... I'm getting real adept at pulling the remaining part out with the needle nose pliers WITHOUT anyone to help me. Currently she is taking in some sunlight and warmth out on the back patio.

Something tells me I'm going to get dirty looks when I bring her back in.

Is there any reason she is doing this? Does the skin look okay? I'm assuming it's always around the same spot?

They are all on the same wing. I believe it is because of the short clip the pet store gave her, the new feathers are very unprotected when they come in and she usually breaks them when she gets acting wild in her cage. I think she bumps them against stuff in her cage and they bend right where the clipped feathers are. They are the primary flight feathers on the outside edge. I wish the ones further in would moult out first and grow in new, I think they would be more protected and then would help protect the others.

I just did some research on this, and the only advice I found was to take the toys etc out, to lessen the risk of damage to the feathers. Don't know how much time your bird spends out of the cage, so I don't know if you feel this is reasonable. Good luck

right now I'm not letting her out, she will try to fly with flight feathers on one side and none on the other, I might take out most of the stuff, she doesn't reallly play with anything but the mirror with beads and it is on the side.

She will sit on a perch and beat her wings a couple times a day, like she is exercising them, but she holds on to the perch. Either that or she is trying to move the perch someplace else... (Laughing out loud)!
