Posted July 26, 200520 yr Around about the end of May going by my photos, Merlins cere sorta changed colour... My uncle saw him the other day and was saying "he's a girl, he's a girl he bites like a girl" I was just like meh, he's just feeling sick.. but going back over my photos he might be right! I swear I read somewhere that some budgies don't necessarily show their real sex until they have had their first moult. When at the vet last week, I asked if he was a girl or a boy, and the vet said well what do you think, and I said boy and he agreed. He also said that sometimes the birds get so interbred to get the coulrs that it can make things go a bit wacko? and you aren't able to tell properly... HOWEVER this evening we took him in, and the other vet thinks he might have a tumour :ausb: Personally I feel we just have a majorly gender confused budgie and him being sick hasn't helped matters either. Here is a picture of his cere from december, not all that long after we brought him home, definitely boyish and was sexed as such. Here is the photo taken this evening! The brown is between the two nasal passages and goes down to the end of the beak and a tiny way along the round edges but there are two clear round patches of a pale blue (pale blue is also a sign of a sick boy budgie apparently... so majorly confused) *scuse the size, it should just fit but it has to be max so you can see it properly!* Help me figure out what sex he is!!!! If its a tumour its not an issue as she said it shouldn't effect him, and if it does effect him and he has one, then we'll deal with it, but for now, he's gender confused. Help me oh wise forum members :(Laughing out loud):
July 26, 200520 yr He really looks like a girl to me in the second picture but a definite boy in the first!!! Argh....this is way too confusing for my brain!
July 26, 200520 yr Here's the link to a bigger one of the "girl" picture if you want to look closer. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/TeGz/Merlincere3.jpg
July 26, 200520 yr merlin is a girl if you ask me ceres wise - but stance wise he looks male if you know what i mean do you have a picture of him when you say he had a clue ceres tegz? Edited July 26, 200520 yr by budgeover
July 26, 200520 yr The top picture is when it was blue. It was a month after he came home. I'm trying to find a better blue cere'd picture but i don't have time at the moment. Will do so in the morning
July 26, 200520 yr I have just had a chat to a fellow breeder. He says "noone knows, its like people who turn gay. The bird will not breed. The bird has possibly decided to change its gender." There you have it. Ive had this, but never was sure why.
July 26, 200520 yr What? So Merlin decided he didn't want to be a boy so changed into a girl? According to what I was just told, yes. I find it hard to imagine though.
July 26, 200520 yr Gosh-you've got a whole mixed bag of things going on there TeGz. Just so you know you're not on your own,I'm beginning to wonder about Sherbet! He is definitely behaving like a female-biting really hard(yes my sweet loving little Sherbet is growing up!) Sitting in anything that looks vaguely nest like? Pulling out and getting aggressive with veggies??? HELP!
July 26, 200520 yr What? So Merlin decided he didn't want to be a boy so changed into a girl? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> According to what I was just told, yes. I find it hard to imagine though. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, fish can change their sex...or at least some can. Maybe other animals can too.
July 26, 200520 yr Well I'm even more confused now. The vet last week said something that I presume would be similar to what your breeder fellow said Adam, yet todays vet said that it's not possible and that he'll have a tumour... hmh, I think I shall just stay confused... Ohh and for anyone wondering, Merlin is feeling fit and healthy. He's to have vitamins syringed weekly cos he won't drink it, and probably probiotics done at the same time too if he doesn't drink the probiotic'd water. They want to keep him healthy. He's also nicer than ever on my finger, no tantys at all. He comes out before medicine, has his medicine then stays out a while. Or he comes out, goes in and comes out again, and he's not fussed at all any more! It's fantastic... s/hes a nice lil budge!
July 26, 200520 yr Yeah, Gherkin would feel much better now I'd reckon :(Laughing out loud): *wonders how Merlin will react when introduced to his cousin in a few months* I guess if he's not really "sexual" it would explain why he's never shown any humping tendancies or even majorly ooh i love anything that moves or has a reflection (ie his mirror).... puzzling.
July 26, 200520 yr So he/she is going to stay innocent all his life! I think that's wonderful, and will probably love you all the more for no distractions. Wouldn't upset me in the least to have a little budgie like that
July 26, 200520 yr Well, Merlin certainly does look like a hen now. Do you know exactly how old s/he is? If it is a tumor, you really need to find that out now. There are dietary changes you can make that may help, if you are into holistic health care at all. A bigger picture of the blue cere would help, though. I can usually sex them early.
July 26, 200520 yr Hmmmmm I'm confused too! On the close up link of the girl picture, I still see a little blue good luck on this one! I hope there is no tumor Edited July 26, 200520 yr by BUUZBEE

The vet poked and prodded him all over and said she couldn't see any signs of a tumour and there wasn't any point in stressing him even more as there's nothing they can really do to stop it if it's a tumour anyway. This picture is taken a few days before the current "boy" one, I don't have any good pics of his cere early as it was pretty obvious what he was, and I didn't have my own camera at the time.

July 26, 200520 yr well if Gooby ever came to me and told me he was thinking of being a girl he'll have to pack his bags im afraid!
July 26, 200520 yr You would never budge! Speaking of which, it's time to wake him up for medicine, mwahahah.
July 26, 200520 yr (Laughing out loud) i was only kidding! what a strange thing to happen Tegz! Bet you can't wait to get to the bottom of it
July 26, 200520 yr I think Merlin is still a boy (i've never heard before of budgies able to change genders and I don't believe it) The change of cere colour would be related to heath issues. The tumour that can't be found most likely. Affecting the hormone levels just like in humans sort of thing.
