Destroyable toys

While reading the thread that introduced the parrot pinata, I was kind of surprised at the attitude of surprise that budgies would destroy that much. Since they're in the same family as parrots, wouldn't they need easily-shredded/destroyed toys as much as parrots do?

(Yes I'm still here :) )

Ahem.

I think budgies definitely need things that can be chewed and destroyed. Mine have a little birdie tree that they demolish as well as the wooden ladders in their cages. Oddly enough, they don't really touch the "chewable" toys that are meant for this but at least they're chewing something.

They also have torn up my mouse pad, headphones, and window blinds. :)

I think most of our spoilt budgies only like to chew what their not meant to chew. You only have to look at Julie's budgies - they have every toy imaginable, and they chew a hole in the blinds and tear the wallpaper off! (Laughing out loud). Budgies are sent to send us insane

And you're smiling about this? (Laughing out loud) i think you are the most budgie controlled person ever to be smiling because they chewed up all that stuff! :P

Blinkie is super talented at chewing up my school work. It annoys me but deep down i know he only trying to decorate the edges of my paper so i get higher grades. :D

I heard that!!! :(Laughing out loud):

You can tell I loved those stories can't you? I want a spoilt budgie!

Mine are pretty good about only chewing what I give them. (Note, I said pretty good...) They do occasionally attack picture frames and the frame of my mirror. But I figured out long ago with this flock of mine, if they can destroy it, they are happy. They never really played with plastic "budgie toys" much, but larger (cockatiel) sized destructo-toys???? If it's wood, they will chew. If it's papery, they will chew. :P If it can be destroyed in any way, they will chew. :)

I have those little plastic lattice bells, and a plastic budgie swing with a bell on it. Whenever I rotate those into the cage, the first thing that happens is one of them will unhook it so it falls to the bottom. I can keep putting it up, and they will keep making it fall. It's like they are saying..."WHAT! How dare you! I can't eat THIS! How could you hang this in MY cage???? Give me better toys!..."

Jensa, my budgies love to chew. But I'm not sure if it is just because I have so many, and they just really consider it another "flock activity" or not. When I had single birds, they did not chew nearly as much, although they still did. Most everything I have read says that only the hens have a need to chew wood. ALL of my birds chew. The males just tend to prefer softer woods. I have a new chewable toy called a Bird-Kabob which is made of very soft papery wood, almost like balsa wood, and the males spend as much time with that toys as the hens do.

my birds dont chew on anything to destroy it much... they play with the little leather pieces on toys and ropes... but the dont go to the exstend of ruining them just leves little beak markes in the leather...

but they do pull up the carpet and make little fluffy spots on a otherwise flat smooth carpet.

that havnt destroyed anything (YET)

Must be tastier than it looks (Laughing out loud)

Where'd you get the bird kabob?

(Laughing out loud)!! You must have the most destructive budgies around Rainbow! :)

LOL, Bea, they are normal to me!

I get the bird kabobs at a bird fair, but I've seen them occasionally in PetsMart. I'm sure you could find them online too.

Mine like to chew on my hubbies model bikes after he's spent months making them - he's not best pleased!! (Laughing out loud)

Talking about detroying..mine likes to chew the paint off the swing which forced me to take it out so that she doesn't eat the paint. Lately, she loves chewing the ring on my finger. The more I say no, it seems like the more she loves to chew on that particular thing. :yellowhead: I wonder what is next.

Hi everyone

I was living (short term for four years) with my sister and my budgie destroyed her house.? He would sit on top of the wooden curtain poles and chew all the wallpaper off the walls so it looked like a pattern of semi-circles of missing wallpaper as far as he could reach (painted walls are far better anyway!!).? He destroyed every plant by stripping it bare and kicking out all the soil.? My bird and absolutely got away with murder including greeting visitors by trying to make a nest out of the top of their heads!? Besides which how do YOU keep your nails/teeth/hair in trim? Birds beaks and nails need attention and chewing (although not wallpaper) does help.

Lesson learned - my Babe can be "destructive" if I let her but I have taught her what is acceptable to chew and what is not.? My "no" means "no" and I think other members when they say no say it in such a way that the bird gets a message of "oooh noooo!!!? - but I do think you are cute and very clever so please carry on!!).

Have fun "stripping" with them - a half inch slice of cucumber placed in between bars soon finds beak sized pieces of cucumber flying all over the place!!? Iceberg lettuce is another good one and I am sure they benefit from the natural juices.

Regards.

Sue

You mean something like this? This is my poor dining room/aviary! :)

Does Sherbet help too now? Has his innocent baby mind been corrupted? :)

Oh yes Bea,he is no longer the sweet innocent thing he was-bites me and bites me hard at the moment too. My fingers and thumb are only good for one thing at the moment and I know you undwerstand only too well what that might be!

Its good to have all these chewys and nibblys, keeps them amused, and stops them getting bored. We all spend a fortune on keeping our birds content dont we!

Graham has a game, i put headless matchsticks in a food container, and he pulls them out and throws them on the floor of his cage...i pick them up, and we start again. Graham loves it...Mum finds it a bit tedious :) but it keeps him amused.

I bet you do ! It sounds good though I might try it-mine like to throw out little screwed up bits of paper from their beloved tealight holder.(Now that reminds me-why DID I buy that thing in the first place?Oh yes so I could have my tealights in it.Must remember to clear out the collected poo and husks so it has a chance to look attractive one day!).

  • 1 month later...

Its the little Grey Julie, he's been caught in the act in the photo! :P I have a reminder of Bobbi with my wallpaper too.

I give Graham things to distroy and nibble. I bought one of those nest hairy finches nests, and pulled it apart. I hang bits in Grahams cage. He loves Pintas, which i put through his perches. Those computer minded Birds...try to distroy the keyboards. When i used a filofax, i used to get comments when i opened it. Pages were always nibbled at the edges by Bobbi. I bought a first edition book, and that got nibbled :P too. I often had nibbled important papers in meetings, which at times was embarrasing telling them it was my Budgie! my fault for leaving it on the floor.

yes they need something of thier own to distroy, its a bird thing!

Whistler can destroy a parrot sized preening/chewing toy in mins.
