Diet for Sherbert?

Featured Replies

Posted

After I got all the budgies home and settled, I got each one out and gave them a quick check over to make sure none of them had hurt themselves on the journey.

When I got Sherbert out, he seemed to be twice as heavy as the rest so I weighed him. He weighs 56 grams. He is a normal small budgie not a big british one. Does he need a diet? If so, how do I do it? They are all in one huge cage, would I have to take him out to get his weight down? I would if I had to but I'd feel awful at seperating him from his friends.

When he'd had enough of sitting on the scales, he waddled off accross the floor - and he had some waddle!! (Laughing out loud)

Was going to post a picture so you can see for yourselves but hubby took the camera with him to the moto gp today so will get some later.

I thought it was my Sherbet when I read the title!

There is an ongoing discussion about diets a the moment on the forums- Boomery is having problems with Candy so there might be some interesting stuff for you there.

Julie

Thank you Julie, I found that after I posted this one (Laughing out loud). I have read through it and there do seem to be some good tips.

Sorry about the name (Laughing out loud), He has a Lutino girlfriend so my sone named them Sherbert and Lemon. The other 2 adults are still currently nameless, and I wont let them name the babies or they'll end up wanting to keep them! (Laughing out loud).

52grams :redalbino:

In my opinion yes he should be on a diet. It has been recommended to me that the "ultimate" budgie weight, for your normal everyday budgie is 42grams, between 40-42 is fine. Any more and a diet must be thought about!

Good luck slimming him down!

Thanks TeGz I think I'll need all the luck I can get!! (Laughing out loud)

Soooo-who's been eating all the pies then!

my rocky was 50g and he was a normal budgie!

when i worried about his weight and put up a post on here it was suggested that becasue he had a lot of fly time it was mucsle tone weight and that apparantlythis weighs more than fat!

Gooby im sure will be a similar weight!

i wouldn't worry.

Thanks budge, and yes Julie - I think he must have done!! (Laughing out loud)

ChessMaster told me he was 9 years old and yes he does get a lot of flying time with such a big cage. He has been out quite a bit more than the others as he is VERY friendly so you may be right budge. Although saying that, he can fly, but not athletically (sorry cant spell) like the others, would that be due to his weight or his age?

52grams

TeGz, that's still too heavy. Normal weight for the smaller type budgies is around one ounce or around 28 - 30 grams. You should barely be able to feel them on your finger. 56 grams is almost twice what he should weigh. I would run any diet you put him on through your vet's first, a quick phone call should take care of that.

Thanks Rainbow will call them tomorrow when they open for their advice, I seem to be on "first name" terms with them now (Laughing out loud).

LOL -I'm that way with my vet's too. Did you weigh them all, or just the one?

Mine are on the heavy side too, but I will be happy with having them under 35 grams. You might not have to seperate him from the rest, hopefully not anyway. Wish you could get some pics.

No I only weighed him because he was so much heavier than the rest. I will weigh the rest of them today though as I'm intrigued now (Laughing out loud).

I promise I will take some pictures later today, got to wait till Jon gets home cos he's gone out for the day with my camera.

Well, that was fun!!! (Laughing out loud)

Just weighed the rest of the brood (wasnt easy to get them to stay still) and they all weigh between 28 (the smallest baby) and 37. Except the Lutino, she's a big british one and even she wasnt as heavy as Sherbert - she came in at 48 (not sure if thats good or bad).

okay, here is a picture of big boy sherbert, it hasnt come out too well cos I used my phone. Will post some proper pictures later but got too impatient waiting for Jon to come back with my camera (Laughing out loud).

They all sound okay, maybe a few grams could come off the biggest ones, but not as much of a worry there as with Sherbet. :( 48 grams sounds about right for the "English" budgies. I've never had them, so not sure but I think they should be between 45-50 grams?? Maybe some people with those type could list their weights so you would have a better idea. Sherbet doesn't look that fat - some of mine have a roll of fat you can actually see.
