Posted July 22, 200519 yr Well, this is just a post about my poor budge named Demon, I got him a year ago at a good pet store. I had no real problem with him, until about 2 months ago... It was a normal day and I had Demon and Spirit (my other budgie) out of the cage... They were having great fun and I was watching them while talking on the phone with my other friend. Suddenly, the power went out. I was kinda scared and I could see abit, since I was in a upstairs room near the window... and I ran for Spirit first and he ran into the cage. I couldn't find Demon, I could hear a scared budgie screaming. I finally found him in the corner. I held him and then put him back in the cage. I spend some more time then normal with him. I think he flew into a wall. After the next couple days... I started to notice that Demon's droppings were more watery then usual. I couldn't understand it, it was pretty much pure water and he wanted more water then normal and would drink about a dish full a day. I went to the vet with him and they took some tests and gave me some medicine. I really wonder if he was going to be okay. I never heard anything from them, after they did some tests. I couldn't understand why, so I phoned up and they didn't know anything. I couldn't understand and I think they didn't know ANYTHING about budgies. I don't have any good vets around me. Today while cleaning their cage (and a couple other times) I found worms inside the bottom cage. they are pretty big about the length of a pinky and pretty thick. I know it has nothing to do with Spirit and his dropping are FINE. I was wondering if there is anything I can do. Please help me with this, I'm very scared for my budgies. Another thing she (Demon) does is puffs up and holds her wings open.. I think she has a fever. Does anyone know of anything that would cause this? Please help me.
July 22, 200519 yr You need to call/ask around & find an avian vet. You could ask the people at the pet store where you got the birds. Good luck.
July 22, 200519 yr You need an avian vet as soon as possible. What do you use to line the cage? Don't hesitate about the vet though.
July 22, 200519 yr I need to ask, I don't know. I really do need to, because she is sick lots... and I'm really worried. My other budgie isn't sick AT ALL... which makes me wonder. I can't find any vets at all. None of them treat budgies here. They always say "They are too small" If anyone has any ideas of what it is, they you can email me. Though I know its almost impossible to dianose a budgie over the internet. I just need the support I think.
July 22, 200519 yr Not almost impossible. 100% impossible. You need to talk to an avian vet and yes, you'll probably have to travel a bit to get to him/her. An avian vet will not tell you that a budgie is too small to treat. A dog/cat/small animal vet probably will because they aren't equipped to deal with birds. The *only* way to diagnose this bird is to have it seen by a certified avain veterinarian and even then, many tests will probably have to be made. It won't help to hesitate and ask for people to email. Even if the problem is figured out, what could anyone do to actually treat it? Absolutely nothing. Try searching here: http://aav.org/vet-lookup/ If that doesn't help, call your local vets and have them refer you to the nearest avian specialist.
July 22, 200519 yr What do the worms look like? Are they, like, earthworms or more parasitic-looking? I'm not sure of any parasitic worms that live outside the host for long. Try taking one of the worms to your vet for analysis, if you think they're related to the bird getting sick. Thanks for that link, eterri!! Edited July 22, 200519 yr by morethanrubies
July 22, 200519 yr I will, Thanks for your help, and I've searched that site, and the nearest vet to me that treats avians is 2 days from by car. Thats pretty far. morethanrubies, they are like stripped worms. I do clean the cage every day. The vet told me to give it pedialite, the baby forula to condence the urine. But thats pretty much all they said, also that its only a quick fix that won't last forever... though it doesn't sound right...
July 22, 200519 yr Try calling that vet. Might get somewhere there. Definitely more info than we can give you!
July 22, 200519 yr Alright, Thanks alot! I'm going to do that tomorrow when it is open... Thanks again!
July 22, 200519 yr State your case, give them all your info, even if you think it's insignificant. Something small might give them a clue. Good luck.
July 22, 200519 yr Another thing that may be worth a shot is to call the vet that saw your bird before and ask if maybe they can refer you to an avian vet that is closer (some vets have a particular interest in exotic birds even though they are not certified avian vets and keep current with the findings and breakthroughs in avian medicine. Your first vet may know of another vet like that.) or if they could do some calling around for you to get a better diagnosis. After all they do have the results of the labwork from your earlier visit. If neither of those work, you could call the avian you found from the link and see if they can give you any help over the phone, or can direct you in some other way. I hope you can find some help for your bird soon.
July 22, 200519 yr Well, I can do that, but the thing is... (I don't know if this is agaist the law or what) but they never gave me results for the tests they did... They are still off I guess, it has been 2 weeks since I phoned them and they said it would be done in 5 days... I'm really starting to get worried about him, though I will go and do everything that you've been telling me.
