getting a new cage

Getting a new (to me) cage from a local breeder, probably tomorrow. Cage & stand for $25 USD. Yahoo! It's 16x16x23, square in shape. She runs a rescue, too.

Anyway, any tips on cleaning it before I put my birds in it? She has sanitized it, just doesn't need it anymore. However, I don't wanna take any chances...any advice? Eterri, Rainbow..?

You can use a weak bleach solution to clean it, or a lot of people use vinegar to clean and disinfect. I'd add all new perches too.

I use a bleach and water mixture if I need to disinfect something really well. I have read all sorts of conflicting advice about how much to use. Some say 3/4 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. Some say half a cup bleach to a gallon of water and even a full cup. I use 1/4 cup to one gallon of water just to be safe so hopefully if there's something wrong with that someone will correct me. The problem if it's too strong is that it can corode the metal of the cage.

You can wipe down the cage with the mixture and then let it sit for a few minutes (15 is probably enough). Then rinse, rinse, and rinse some more! Let it air dry outside and make sure all this is done far from your birds as the fumes from bleach are harmful to their little respiratory systems.

Thanks, I was wanting to use bleach but safely. I have a big concrete area outside for cleaning. I'm going to add all new perches, too. Thanks! She used it a couple times as a holding cage for bigger birds, then cleaned & stored it. Hopefully it works out & I'll get a play gym for the top of it! Yay budgies!

Husband won't let me get the new cage. Already had to replace dishwasher this month, so he's paranoid about money. Cheap Norwegians!! :) (He's 4th generation actually, so I guess I can't use it against him.) Anyway, thanks for your advice. Now I know. *crying* (not really)

Aw, sorry about that. :) Hopefully another one will come your way when he's in a more spendy mood!

I know it's not the only one out there. I don't work outside the home anymore, so I kinda forget to clear things with him. Used to my own money. Oh, well!
