Thinking About Breeding

I am thinking about breeding Stimpy & Sky when they are ready (Not Now) :)

P.S. How can I post up Pictures :artist ?

Thanks! :(

The most important question is why do you want to breed?

Some other very very important things to consider are:

Can you be sure your birds are not related?

Are you sure they're from good stock and won't pass along health issues?

How do you plan on finding homes for all the babies? If you can't find homes, can you keep them yourself?

Do you have a good avian vet who you trust?

Have your birds been checked out, tested, and found in perfect health?

Are you financially able to cover the costs of taking care of more birds and emergency vet care if the need arises?

Does everyone in your household know what breeding entails (the cost, the noise, the space, etc.) and approve?

I've been in your position and had to ask myself all of those things. When it comes down to it, I think it's important that you do what's best for the birds, no matter how cute babies might be. If you just want to have more budgies and see babies it might be better to take in rescues or just adopt budgies in need of homes. If you are interested in genetics and improving the species as a whole, that's wonderful and if you can cover all your bases, I hope it all works well for you. Of course, I'm not saying that's the -only- good reason to breed but any responsible breeder strives to improve the species no matter what animal you're breeding. Budgies have suffered a great deal from inbreeding, that's how we have so many colors and mutations! That is also why it is SO important that you do everything not to add to this problem. Help the species becomes more hardy and have a longer healthier happier life. :) I'd love to see a budgie breeder who is focused on this because it is by far the most important goal to have in mind. Getting pretty colors would be fun but knowing you've got healthy, hardy birds has got to be even more rewarding!

I 'm not so shure about somthing :D

I got both of my birds from the same store, but diffirent cages, so i'm nto shure if their related.

If your not sure if their related, then don't breed them! I know it's not the answer you wanted, but I think it's too big a risk to take.

I agree with lin.

And keep in mind it's not just about whether or not birds are related. It's the fact that you know nothing about pet store birds' backgrounds. A couple of years from now it might become evident that they have some serious inherited health problems. This means their chicks can have this and pass it on. It's a vicious cycle resulting in unhealthy budgies full of traits that shouldn't be passed along.

In the end it's your decision of course, but please take time to weigh the pros and cons that affect not only you, but your budgies. I know breeding can be fun and babies are cute but you have to keep your focus on the fact that it's dealing with living, breathing, dependent creatures.

Another point worth considering, WHY do you want to breed? If its mainly because you want the 'joy'(?) of seeing the eggs, the hatching, the developing babies, then, in my honest oppinion, thats not reason enough. Think of the long term affects, the 'unwanted novelties' the sweet babies who grow up knowing nothing but bars, and an enclosed space, because the 'so full of promises and devotion' carers that yur babies are sold/given to, just cant be bothered with their tiny, dependant feathered friend. I work in the rescue side of things, so Im very biased, cos I see the results of 'too much trouble birds' every day of my life. Im not judge and jury, Im nowhere near qualified to be that, Im just VERY cautious and uneasy when people innocently want to breed, yet know not of the horrors that can lie ahead for the beautiful, innocent babies that come forth from the 'love' of the innocent, unaware breeder.

Its worth a thought, is it worth it in the long run?

Thanks! :D

You need to do a lot of research before breeding your birds. Don't get me wrong, but i don't think you're ready yet since your first question was how to post pictures and nothing regarding the birds.

I also agree with everyone here, don't get us wrong but breeding is not as easy as it looks. :D Never breed your birds if there is a chance they may be related! :)
