Posted July 20, 200520 yr Hello. I posted a question earlier about my new budgie (he is probably 8-10 weeks old) and his tendency to have feces stuck on his vent. Well, I grabbed him for the first time today (to clean him up) and discovered that he is even smaller than I thought. Can anyone tell me when budgies have their growth spurt. I swear my 1 year old is twice the size of my baby one! Now I am concerned. He eats a lot so that is not the reason. Could it be related to the poopy bum, or something else? Oh yeah, his poops are also quite a bit bigger than my older budgie. This seems rather odd. I wonder if there is a connection. Any information would be much appreciated
July 20, 200520 yr When the birds I have were babies, they were slightly larger than the parents when they fledged, and slimmed down after they learned to fly. I would think your bird should be normal weight, which for "pet" (American Shell parakeets) would be about 1 ounce (28-30 grams). Larger "English" (exhibition size) budgies would weigh more. I think you should take him to the vet since you are concerned about it.
July 20, 200520 yr My bird has been flying already for quite some time. It's weird. He feels heavy on my finger but looks quite small to the eye. He eats really well. I just assumed that babies were smaller than full grown adults. I would take him to the vet but my hubbie thinks I am being overworried so have to try convincing him (which I can do).
July 20, 200520 yr i wouldn't wory about his size as i have adults that are realy small conpared to some of my over birds. the smaller ones are fiter and more agilal than the biger ones. the poop problem could just be him ajusting to a new diet but i would take him to the vet just in case. Also give him probiotic adatives this will help him bild a good immunesitem i use Aviforms probiotic called prolyte-c for my birds. you can get this of there site www.aviform.com
July 21, 200520 yr There is a wide range of "normal" sizes in American budgies. One of my males is quite a bit larger than the rest too, but he came from the same parents and is not an English budgie. The English ones are quite a bit larger, is it possible your first one is an English budgie?
July 22, 200520 yr Thanks for the replies. I don't think I have an English budgie. I saw the vet today for Newton's poop on the feathers problem (which turned out to be enteritis) and he said he just has smaller bone structure. He weighed in okay, which is weird. He is really dense (not dumb, but compact in size and larger in mass than meets the eye). Thanks for the good words it certainly made me worry less.
July 22, 200520 yr poor little guy. Glad to hear that he is not underweight. Rainbow what is this I see you can using American to defind an budgie!!!! okay I can agree that an exhibition size bird is commonly called English but not a pet budgie being American.
July 22, 200520 yr LOL, nerwen. okay, otherwise known as American Shell parakeet. I think the term American must've gotten shortened from that.
