Huey isn't well!

Hi everyone, hope that you are all okay? I haven't been on the site for ages but i have been enjoying the summer holidays alot.

My budgie huey has not been well, the only way i can describe what he doing is being sick!! I know that this may seem odd. But one night at four a clock in the morning he started splattering seed all over his cage and he was doing this for about an hour. He then stopped and continued to do the same again in the morning but not for as long.

The seed that is coming out is full of white liquid, that is why i said it's like he is being sick. He ends up absoulately soaked after.

I have taken him to see a vet who thought it could be a internal parasite so he was given antibiotics. he was then okay. Then the vet said he could be eating his food to fast so he told us to take his food out and only give it to him three times a day. This worked but then he started doing again.

I have also been asked if he gets to much sunlight during the day, but we make sure he has shade form the sun, but he gets ill like this even in the winter.

What can be up with my little budgie, please help me if you can!? :)

Kim, is your vet an Avian vet? If not, do you have an Avian vet in your area/ Obviously, you yourself are well aware that this shouldnt be happening. (to be honest, Ive NEVER heard of such a thing as a budgie being sick because its wolfed its food down too fast!) Also, daytime sunlight wont hurt him, so long as he's not in the full glare (and in my oppinion, this is more likely to lead to respiratory problems rather than constant vomiting)

How long have you had his current batch of seed? Is it possible its gone sour? Was a probiotic provided with the anti biotic? And were you given any vitamin/mineral suppliments to help replace the nutients etc that he is losing through this vomiting? It sounds to me (this is NOT a diagnosis, I am not in any way veterinary qualified) like there could be an acute crop infection. Has this been mentioned at all? Sorry about all the questions, but they may help us give you a bit more advice. (Again, it is only advice/guidance, we are not qualified to diagnose)

I am going this very minute to do some research for you, and I will be right back.

Anne

okay, am back. Here is one very good link, just scroll down until you come to 'vomiting'.

I shall be back with more shortly.

This may be worth testing for,

Giardia

A Giardia infection in psittacine birds may be asymptomatic or the birds may exhibit signs of weight loss, bulky or loose foul-smelling stools, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, depression, and recurring yeast infections.

Dry skin and feather picking is typical in budgerigars and cockatiels suffering from Giardiosis.

First of all thank you for the very helpful link to the website, as you sid is very good. Secondly the vet we are currently going to is not an avian vet, however we do have one that is about 45 mins drive away from where i live. Next time he is being sick we are taking him there, providing the joruney does not cause more stress.

When we say vitamins and minerals do you mean sundrop in his water? Otherwise no he only gets cuttlefish, iodine block, grit and millet spary. We feed him on trill, which we change everyday and give him fresh. It is never out of date as we check to make sure.

Thankyou chirpy for all your helpful and useful information, i will update on his progress as soon as i know what is wrong with him. I'm very impressed chirpy, you seem to know alot about budgies, i think you sholud become an avain vet

I think Chirpy is right - you need to see an avian vet. If it was an internal parasite I can't see how antibiotics could possibly help? They are usually given for an infection of some sort. Also I've never heard of a budgie being sick from too much seed either.I have a strong feeling the vet may have been guessing.Try taking the grit out too-it won't harm to see if that is causing any problems.

Julie

Take the grit out!? I thought this was essential to help the budgies digest thier food, when you say take it out do you mean just for a bit.

Huey seems okay at the moment he hasn't been sick now for a few days, however if and when it happens again i will be sure to take him to the avain vet straight away.

I will keep you posted.

Thank you for your help.

um..I have read somewhere that caged birds do not need as much grit as wild birds..i will try to find the link..as I have forgotten :D

Well it can cause some birds to have crop problems so I thought it might be a good idea to take it out for a week or so to see if there is any difference. There are two different trains of thought on this. Some say that budgies do need it,others disagree. it won't do him any harm to try without it for a while.
