Posted July 9, 200519 yr just wondered if anyone can advise if this is normal , dare i say mating behavior (Laughing out loud).........the hen (barney , and yes i named him that because i thought he was male (Laughing out loud)) started goin into the box first by herself, then the cock (fred) started feeding her through the entrance hole, and then pulling little feathers from under his wings and giving her them, then later on today for about an hour or more they have both been inside the box together, is this normal, i thought only the female would go inside? any advice would be very much appreciated please Thanks so much Dawn xx
July 9, 200519 yr Don't know about normal (because we are talking about budgies, and I have learnt that they are anything but normal) but mine do this. Well, actually they have an egg now, so sometimes Scruffy (the boy) is actually allowed to sleep in there with Gypsy. Lucky boy. (Laughing out loud) She's not a big one for allowing him to sleep - she constantly nags him when he tries to grab a nap during the day! 'Scruffy, where's my lunch? I'm sitting on your egg, you know, I can't do it without food. Truly, your such a lazy bird. No, I don't want that, go get me some millet. What do you mean, you ate it all!' Good luck.
July 9, 200519 yr (Laughing out loud) Lin that was great and just what freckle sounded like too. Yes this is normal although I've never heard of the male plucking himself to get som nest decortation, but I can't see why they can't Pie was allowed into the nest box as well and I thought it was very odd myself since ALL the books i read said only the female would enter. I would just keep an eye on them still though becuase if she isn't ready to lay and egg they might not get out enough to mate.
July 10, 200519 yr Razzo let Budgie go in the nest box with her. He helped sit on the eggs and feed the babies right from day one.

Good luck. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> (Laughing out loud) thanks for that lin, i chuckled my little head off when i read that, i can imagine them doing and saying that to each other......and why not, she is female after all (Laughing out loud)! Thanks for all the replies, don't know what has happened in there but they are all acting like ....well rabbits basically, so hopefully we may be hearing the patter of tiny feet soon, ooooh fingers crossed. I will keep you informed love Dawn x
July 12, 200519 yr When my birds were nesting, George used to go inside the box and sleep in there. I think Cleo liked the company! He'd also go all the way in when feeding her.... He was a good father, in fact, too good, he made himself sick because he wasnt getting enough nutrients cause he was always feeding Cleo!
July 15, 200519 yr Pie was allowed into the nest box as well and I thought it was very odd myself since ALL the books i read said only the female would enter. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Mitsi is aloud in she sit on the eggs on the dip shes made and he sits on the flat bit quietly wait for his next order.
