Lovebirds and Budgies?

Featured Replies

Hi. I have two budgies named Sunny and Oscar. I was thinking about getting a lovebird or some other type of small parrot or parakeet thats fairly inexpensive. I won't put them in the same cage, but I was wondering, is it possible for lovebirds and budgies to become friends? Would they get along if I took them out together under supervision?

Also, are there any other small parrots or parakeets (fairly inexpensive, under $100) that DO get along with budgies well? And/or that could be housed in the same cage?

Please help! :D

love bird deffiatley cannot interact with budgies and no other types of parrots can be housed with budgies in a cage (possibly in a big avairy though) it would be best to get more budgies, cockateils can get along with budgies but only under strict supervision and not housed together, a cockateil is actually more likley to be bullied by a budgie than the other way round

though ulimatley it depends on the individul birds, even budgies might not get along together but a budgie/teil might get on great, the major downside is that they are physically very different and a cockateil coul seriously injure a budgie in a second, even if they are being supervised

Even in a large aviary I would never house lovebirds with budgies. Lovebirds are extremely agressive, even to each other. Most of the lovebird owners I know can't have their lovies and other birds out at the same time, it's just too dangerous. It depends on the bird, of course, but lovebirds could do quite a bit of damage in a short amount of time.

It is not a good idea to mix parrot species in the same cage. Like Andy said, some people have had a little luck with cockatiels and budgies in the same cage but I would NEVER recommend this. Cockatiels are very docile, gentle birds but budgies are aggressive. You'd likely end up with a very scared or injured 'tiel and if it decided to fight back, you'd have an injured or dead budgie.

What is your reason for wanting to add another type of bird to your budgie cage?

So...lovebirds can't even be taken out in the same room together even in strict supervision?

Personally, I wouldn't chance it. If you watched carefully it might work out but I've heard from most lovebird owners that it just doesn't work, the lovies are too aggressive with other birds. It's hard to even keep lovebirds and lovebirds together.

I have to say I agree. I have kept lovebirds in the past, and they are nasty birds! I wouldn't trust them aroudn budgies, even under supervision.

okay, then forget that...

What I'm really trying to find out is what type of parrot or parakeet would get along fairly well with budgies? Would a parrotlet be okay? Or is a cockatiel my best bet? (note that I am NOT going to keep them in the same cage)

Parrotlets can be as agressive as lovebirds but you'd probably have more luck with a green rump than you would with a pacific. (Green rumps are generally more timid than pacifics.)

I have a couple of cockatiels and four budgies. They do fine under supervision but I'd never leave them alone together. As long as you're near and watch them closely, it could work.

I think cockatiels are your best bet too. They are pretty placid birds (oh, and one of my favourites, so I am biased!). Like Eterri said, supervision is the key.

I have a Kakariki and 2 budgies (not in the same cage) and they come out to play together under supervision. They seem to get on really well, not sure if they are supposed to, but dont think they've read the bit in the book that says that yet (Laughing out loud).

Kiki ends up feeding smokey when they come out together as if to adopt him, really cute to watch.

As I said, not sure if they are "supposed" to get on so wouldnt recommend it unless you had proper advice, but mine seem to be fine.

Sal.

i think the Bourke?s Parakeet can get along with budgies quite well, in apperacnce it looks just like a red budggie, butagain it is a much more docile bird so they should only be allowed out under strict supervision

i needed a full stop here (Laughing out loud)

as in teils and some kinds of parakeets :D
