Soda perfectly steps up onto my hand now and eats millet from there like there is no tomorrow! He even lets me stroke his back a bit, but only when he can see what I'm doing, which is fine. Are there any simple tricks I could teach him so he doesn't get bored with me? I have to say, since he knows step up so well now, I have not been having as much fun as usual.

You could try teaching him colours, its quite simple to do and great fun for the budgie:

 

1) Cut 3 small circles of paper, using 3 different colours (eg red blue yellow)

 

2) Let him see you hide his favorite treat under one of the circles and when he takes his

treat say the colour.

 

3) Repeat stage 2 but put it under a different colour.

 

Do this for a while until he gets the hang of it, then stop letting him see where you put the treat so he has to find it for himself. When he finds it, again, say the colour that you put it under. Eventually the idea of the game is to hide the treat, say the colour and he'll go to it straight away.

 

It took Frosty about 5 weeks but he now knows the colours red blue and yellow (if he's in the right mood to play), he's pleased as punch when he gets it right!
