Posted June 29, 200519 yr So this question is a little different from most of the other questions being asked here, but I figure breeders would be the best people to ask! (Laughing out loud) Visiting home after leaving my budgies with my parents for a month, I discovered that one of my boys is, in fact, a girl. But I do not want my little ones to have babies. I'm not necessarily against breeding per se, but as a student I wouldn't have the time, the space, nor the funds to really be able to take care of that. And I would never want to be an uneducated breeder at that! Is it "safe" then to leave the two of them in a cage together without worrying about them mating? Will she only lay eggs if she has a nesting box?? I'd really be upset if I had to separate them so I'm hoping things willl work out as they are! *crossing fingers* (Laughing out loud) Thanks!
June 29, 200519 yr I'm no expert, definately not a breeder, but I've heard they wont normally mate unless they have an appropriate place to nest. Just keep in mind, if you let them out of their cage on a regular daily basis, there are lots of places a budgie might find to use as a makeshift nest. Risha
June 29, 200519 yr Some, and I believe it is rare, will lay an egg without a box, but I think it's only the one egg every so often, not a clutch of them.
June 30, 200519 yr Author Thanks for the replies Risha & Lin. I guess only time will officially be able to tell if tey'll be so determined to have babies that they decide to look "elsewhere" for a nest (they are for a majority of the day, but tend to spend it in the area of their cage so should be safe....I hope! :blow: ) but I do feel somewhat better now. It's good to know I hopefully won't need to separate them!
July 1, 200519 yr You should be okay. Many years ago (I was in high school) I had two true pairs in one cage, and they never showed any interest in breeding at all. A few years ago I got Rainbow, then added Skittles a year after him. They were in the same cage for over a year with no problems. I gave them a bigger cage, and presto, babies. I did add a nest box, but only when I realized she was going to lay eggs behind the cushions in my sofa instead. But I think that is the exception and not the rule. July 1, 200519 yr Author I've informed my parents that under no certain terms are they allowed to bring either Jack nor Galen near the computer. If they came across this site who knows what they'd start doing!!
