Posted June 28, 200520 yr Hi We have a baby budgie called billy who is only 5 or 6 weeks old. For some unknow reason to use billy will not sit on his perches but chooses to sit on the bottom of his cage instead. If you place him on a perch he will only stay there for a very short while before climbing down to the floor, when we take him out and place him on a solid surface he wont walk or stand up properly, he kind of sits on his bum. He is also spending alot of time just sleeping. He flew into a window yesterday so we rushed to the vets, the vet gave him anti-flamitory tablets and said billy didnt looked concussed and his orientation was good for a young bird. Anyone got any ideas, ive searched the internet but cant find anything. Sorry about the spelling aswell, havnt got my head on today :budgiedance:
June 28, 200520 yr Can i also ask is it normal for a budgie to be taken away from its mom as young as 3/4 weeks old? Billy wont walk but pulls himself along with his beak
June 28, 200520 yr Baby birds don't usually leave the parents till they are about 6 weeks old. I'm just wondering if he is a bit too young to perch etc. Was the vet an avian vet? Julie
June 28, 200520 yr 3 to 4 weeks is too young. He should have stayed with is parents for at least 6 weeks. He needs to see an avian vet immediately. Not a dog and cat vet, an avian one!
June 28, 200520 yr Afraid to say it wasn't an avian vet. Im really worried now, the man bought us the budgie and told us he was about 3 weeks old. We've never owned a bird before and thought this was very young but normal as his a breeder and you've just confirmed it is so wrong to do this. I dont even think his learned to clean himself or anything due to being taken away so quick, could he be affected by being taken from his parents so early? Will take him to a avian vet tomorrow and get he looked over. I bet the little guy is so lonely at this young age without his parents. Any advice on how we can make him more comfortable untill tomorrow?
June 28, 200520 yr Im sorry to hear you are having such a worring time with your first budgie... Little budge was too young really but you werent to know really ..As for the vet..an avian vet will be your safest bet.. If i were you Id just give him a little nest type place to sleep where he is warm and comfy ..Is he eating and drinking..?? Leave some food and water nearby.. Good luck at the vets. please let us know how you get on.. :budgiedance:
June 28, 200520 yr Its also possible no one really taught him how to do motor skills properly and hes just not used to them so he decides to sit on his bum
June 28, 200520 yr I hope he's at least nearly weaned. :budgiedance: Has he been eating at all? If not, can you find out where he was bought and see if he can be hand fed or put back with his parents for a little longer?
June 29, 200520 yr Thank you everyone for your quick replys and advice. We gave the budgie back to the poeple. He went too the vets as he seemed so much worse this morning than ever before...we could of cried it was so upsetting. Hopefully now he will have the chance to learn what he needs to learn and get a good head start in getting better. Thank you again everyone your stars, will keep you updated if we hear anything x x x
June 29, 200520 yr I'm glad to hear that,I think you've done the right thing and I hope you won't use that particular breeder again,he needs reporting in my opinion. It must have all been so upsetting for you but hopefully now you've found this forum you can learn lots and start again with the right budgie for you. Julie Thanks for letting us know too.
