BUBBLE BABY

Featured Replies

I have a nest of 4 baby budgies,

The oldest is about 3 weeks old and the youngest is about 2 weeks old,

The problem is with the youngest,

For the last 2 days I have cheked the nest box the baby has looked like a ping pong ball, because of trapped air in between its skin and internal organs,

I have twice now burst the bubble by a small pin **** to the skin, Which releases the air.

But the next day the same thing the baby is all blown up again.

The others in the nest are all fine so it cant be the feeding method,And it isn,t the crop thats inflated its the area between the body and the skin.

Any ideas what this could be?.

Gill. :)

I don't know. I wonder how air is getting trapped there? Do you have a vet you could call and ask? It doesn't sound good. :)

Could it be an air sac rupture? There is some info on the web about it.Tried to put a link in but it wouldn't work.

Julie

Not sure what that would be, but it sounds bad. Besides the air, are there any other symptoms? Does the air smell bad? Some infections give off gas (thinking along the lines of gangrene.)

Time to talk to a vet definately.

Thanks for all youre advice,

Unfortunatly the chick was dead this morning,

I think Julie was right with the ruptured air sac as the chick was constantley swelling up after each time i released the air from its body.

I have never come across this problem before,

So i think maybe it doesn,t often happen.

The remaining chicks are all fine.

im sorry about the little one gillian. :dbb1: it does sound like a rare problem. i have never heard of anything like it before, perhaps for some reason his little body wasnt quite developed enough.

at least he is at rest now and im glad all the other chicks are fine

i wish them well

That's a new one for me too. I'm very sorry he didn't make it, but am glad the rest show no problems.

I must say,the stuff I read about on the web did sound pretty serious, sorry it ended this way.

Julie

Thankyou for all youre kind thoughts.
