Posted June 19, 200519 yr Hello, My mom was giving me a hard time for putting the budgies to bed so early. I told my sister to start putting dolly to bed at 8, and she that I was not nice. I expalined that they need 10-12 hours of sleep and that Dolly was not getting that much sleep, then she asked me why they would need 10-12 hours of sleep when there is no way that the birds outside sleep that much. Currently the sun sets at around 10 and rises at like 6... I could not awnser her becuase I did not know, Do you know the awnseR?
June 19, 200519 yr i put my birds to bed in co ordinance with the sun. i figure that wild birds do this and it would be in a budgies natural instinct to do the same. i put them to bed as soon as it starts to get dark, so later in the summer and earley in the winter i think birds need more sleep in the winter when it is colder.
June 19, 200519 yr i put them to bed in accordance with the sun, but i usaully let them have a lie in (because im not awake at sunrise (Laughing out loud)) so they do get atleast 10 hours
June 20, 200519 yr The 10-12 hour rule is based upon the fact that most of the parrots we keep have their homes nearer the equator than we are in the states or Canada or in the UK. There the days/nights are roughly even all year 'round, so in the wild the birds are used to days and nights being roughly the same length.

I knew the logic had to come from somewhere.
