New eggs ~ 1 lost baby

Please help! We have 8 budgies, 4 pairs. 3 of the females have laid eggs. Minnie was the first to lay them. One hatched yesterday. It was tiny, I thought under developed, until I searched online for newborn pics! When I checked on them this morning, it didnt make it :dbb1: She laid her first egg on 6/3 so I figure it should have hatched around 6/20 ish. Was it too early hatching on 6/14? This is her first clutch, maybe she didn't know to feed it or keep it warm? Maybe her mate Mickey didn't know what to do? Also, last weekend, one of the eggs was off to the side, I used a chop stick (didnt want to touch it, just incase my scent would scare off mom) to roll it back with the others. Could this have caused a problem that could have made the little guy not make it? (got too cold???)

We live in So. Cal. so the nights are pretty mild, our aviary is under our pattio, and I have screens that I roll down every night just in case there is a breeze. So I dont think it got too cold.

Any info would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

This is my first time on this site, so I will try to figure out how to post my pics!

Thanks, Anna :D

Hello and welcome from U.K. :D

I'm not a breeder so can't help professionally but I would suspect it was just nature-this happens sometimes.

The more knowledgeable ones will be able to help though.

Looking forward to keeping up to date with all your adventures!

Julie

This happened to me the first time one of my girls layed - after she had three lots she layed eggs that were considerably bigger in size!

I know it is sad but be patient and hopefully all will come good! ;)

Thank you Vicky,

I am afraid she is not sitting on the eggs like she should be too. When she first hatched them, she was on the all the time. Lately she has been off alot. My other girl Diasy has 4 eggs also, she is about 4 days behind Minnie, she is still on them all the time. Hopefully Minnie has better luck with her last 3 eggs. We'll see how tomorow goes!

Thanks again,

Anna ;)

Welcome Buuzbee, If you have your dates right it was very eairly for the little fellow to hatch, that only makes the egg 11 days. :(

How old are mum and dad? sometimes this can happen if the parents are young!

In your other post you say she is not sitting on them. Did you candle them around 5 days to see if they were all fertile? They may not be.

Good luck and keep us posted. :(

Thank You for the reply,

I think the egg hatched early (there was one egg that had been pushed to the side at about 10 days, I put it back, maybe this was the one), baby #2 hatched Friday, day 17. And baby #3 hatched Sunday. They are both soooo healthy! One more to go! They both have nice full crops, and the peeping noises are so cute.

I took Popey and Olive out of the aviary, I think she was creating too many problems. She wouldnt sit on her own 3 eggs, and spent all the time sticking her head into Minnie & Daisy's boxes. The aviary seems very calm now!

Mom and Dad are about 8+ months old.

Daisy finaly got off the eggs, and I was very surprised, she has 5 eggs. This coming week should be very exciting!

And little Sylvester and Tweety was slow to start, but they were mating this morning!

Thanks for you help!

Anna :)
