Posted June 11, 200520 yr okay, I've had Sunny for almost a year, and Oscar since last January. I love these guys so much, but the problem? I just don't know how to tame them! Sometimes they might let me VERY gently and slowly stroke their bellies, but they almost always move away and look at me with big eyes as if to say, "Omg why are you touching me? ) I'm on the verge of giving up- I just don't know what to do. Sunny used to let me hold him, pet him, and he'd step up on my finger all of the time, until he got sick and had to give him antibiotics. (before we even got oscar) I think that might have ruined our bond because we always had to grab him out of the cage and pur medicine into his mouth. Oscar is temped by the millet spray and will come onto my hand if I'm holding it, but never lets me even get close to touching him. Sunny? Forget it, he just wants the millet spray and no matter what, will not go on my hand. They don't like any other food besides millet spray, and don't play with toys either, so I don't even know how to lure them out of their cage. Please, please, can you give me advice? I really need help and I just don't know what to do anymore.
June 11, 200520 yr i think you might have to give up on getting them any tamer thanthey are now. you are lucky they let you touch their tummys. I don't know anyone who has two budgies who are very tame. just enjoy them as they are and enjoy watching them interact with each other.

What I really want is for THEM to be happy, its not so much as me. They are just stuck in their cage all of the time, and they don't play with their toys, which worrys me because they look bored most of the time. Maybe they don't have the right toys?
June 11, 200520 yr try opening the cage and placing millet on top of the cage. that way they wil have to come out of the cage to get it. it is a shame they don't come out for a fly. do they want to come out or is it that you can't catch them when they need to go back in?

I just recently got their wings clipped so they couldn't hurt themselves (as accidents can and do happen) and also so I wouldn't have to worry about sunny always flying to the ceiling fan where I couldn't get him down. :(Laughing out loud): I was thinking about setting up sort of a budgie playground or some fun things for them to do outside AND inside of the cage. What sort of toys would you or anyone else suggest?
June 11, 200520 yr well there are lots of toys available. any put a post on here yesterday about budgie toys. have a look onthe other forums and see if you can find it. as for letting them out i would keep opening their cage and putting nice things out the cage to tempt them.
June 11, 200520 yr I just skimmed through this so I'm sorry if I ask a question you've already answered. Have you tried taking them to a quiet room and working with them one on one? That's the very best way to do it if they're young. And it's very possible to have two budgies that are tame as I've got four. It just takes a little more work but it sounds like you're on the right track. Don't give up! And give this a read: http://eterri.com/taming.html

Unfortunatley however, my budgies are not young..they weren't even young when I got them so I have no clue how old they are. Would your taming method still work though?
June 11, 200520 yr I really don't think it would hurt to still give that method a try. You're probably running a bigger chance of getting bitten but don't react to the bites (as you probably already know) and with their wings being clipped it'll help a lot. If the bird you're working with doesn't calm down after a reasonable amount of time put it back in the cage. I think it could work though and it's definitely worth a shot!
