Posted June 7, 200519 yr well i know this may sound a bit stupid but does a budgie have to have a certain ammount of light, because im getting a shed soon to keep my budgies in wen i get them and theres only 1 small window.im going to paint it white inside so it brightens the place up a bit but should i put another window in or get a real light fitted.any info would be great thx.
June 7, 200519 yr well as much natural light as possible is the best thing. also, if you can, try getting an avian lamp to go in there. it provides the full spectrum of light that budgies need to generate vitamins in their bodies. some people have them, some people dont bother with them, but it provides all the goodness of natural light that is usually filtered out through windows. worth looking into i think Edited June 7, 200519 yr by pixie25
June 7, 200519 yr If at all possible, could you attach a small flight to your shed? That way they could get natural light, yet still be able to get out of the elements.
June 7, 200519 yr (Laughing out loud) thats a good point rainbow, i think i read that post wrong, i presumed that the window would lead to an outdoor flight. it seems weird to have just a shed, without a flight. all the budgies inside and nowhere to admire them from! if you dont have space for a real flight, maybe you could remove one side of the shed and replace it with mesh so that they have shelter from the wind but are also a little bit outside aswell? have you thought about how you would open the door for cleaning and maintenance without the birds escaping?
June 8, 200519 yr im not going to let them fly around the shed free, well i dnt know how im going to do it yet but theuy deffinatly wont be flying free in the shed.and thx for the advice about light and i think i will see how them avin lights work and were i can gety them frm.or i may attach a small flight to the back of the shed facing my house and that way i can see them.thx for the advice guys.
June 8, 200519 yr All animals get vitimin D from the sun. Budgies included. If you do only use atificial light make sure you consider this fact. Also am I right to assume that you are going to keep the budgies in cages inside the shed with no access to sunlight.
June 8, 200519 yr im going to have a aviary or flight inside the shed attached to a flight or another aviary outside the shed.theres also going to be a window in one side of the shed were sun light comes thourgh most of the day.

Also am I right to assume that you are going to keep the budgies in cages inside the shed with no access to sunlight. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> the whole point of an avian lamp is for it to provide the same goodness from sunlight from an artificial source. at least thats the theory behind them, i have never owned one so i can really comment on how well they work. from what i have heard they are recommended though, especially for larger parrots. if you are going to have a flight on the side there wouldnt be much use having one unless it gets really cold where you are in the winter and you will keep the birds in the shed to keep them warm during this time.
June 8, 200519 yr hiya there, don't panic about making the avairy its easy enough and you will do fine! I have never built anything before, but i bought a shed, built that then went on to build my aviary, the shed is 7'x7' as is the aviary, I bored a 2 inch hole in the side as you can see from the photo its behind my little boy, i also meshed the windows inside area where i built them their indoor enclosure, so they didnt try flying out through the window (Laughing out loud), now they stand on the mesh look out (Laughing out loud). anyhow good luck with yours you will enjoy every minute of it im sure. take care love Dawn *put each picture down so it didn't affect the board* -n Edited June 9, 200519 yr by nerwen
June 8, 200519 yr thats okay is that your son in the picture? thats a very nice picture of him. is he responsible for naming the budgies? (Laughing out loud) i think their names are really sweet just another quick Q is all of the space inside the shed a big indoor flight or do you have a small flight inside and an place for storage and stuff like that?
June 9, 200519 yr Hiya Pixie, The 02 boys in the pictures (one is hiding behind the enclosure (Laughing out loud)) are both mine the one in the enclosure is 15, (yes i had him when i was very young about 06 i think (Laughing out loud)) the little one in the other photos are of my 03 year old, and i have one more son who's 13, all three sons named the budgies, but Cooper (littlest one) named the majority, as he came to collect most of them with us, but i named Esmi (short for Esmerelda) and my hubby named Barney, we have told the eldest 02 that they can name the first babies if we are lucky enough to have any! No they dont get the full inside of shed to fly around in, as i thought they would spend most time outside as its in the sunny part of the garden, and also sheltered there by an 08 foot fence behind them, and half the roof is covered to protect them from the rain incase they didnt want to go in the shed. the shed is dedicated to the pets only and so i use 01 part for storing pets food, hay etc, i also have part of our other shed where i built a quarantine for them
