Removing from Avery

After persevering for so long with my little splayed legged budge, it seems as if things didnt work as well as what I thought. He is able to get around but his little belly is awfully low to the ground so I dont think he will ever be quite normal. The problem at the moment is that I have found that he is getting kicked out of the nesting box, (both babies have ,but older one is quite capable of getting around).

Would it be better to bring little one inside in a separate cage which I have & feed him-myself, or just to leave him where he is in the avery. Each time I see him on the floor I do pick him up & put him back, its just that if he gets kicked, or falls out toward evening, I wont find him til morning & it is winter here so temps. are getting extremely low.

Any ideas any-one? :yellowhead:

I'm not a breeder, but I'd say bring him inside and feed him yourself. If he keeps falling out he could hurt himself.

I would bring him inside....you don't want him to get hurt. How old is he?? Can he eat seed yet?

I'm not real sure if he can eat seed, I did try him with some bread crumbs thismorning & he didnt seem to be real interested. I can try him on other things like the muselli or (Laughing out loud), still have the arrowroot biscuits. Would I be better off using a syringe? or something else? Also, what type of "bedding" in the cage?

Do you have a photo of him? Has he got all his feathers yet? If he does then he shouldn't need any special bedding. You should leave a millet spray on the cage floor (if that's where he spends his time) so he has the opportunity to try that and you should offer him some egg and biscuit mix (you can buy it from pet shops). If he's too young to eat on his own then you can either buy some hand raising mix or feed him egg and biscuit mix with a syringe or small spoon (depending on age). :D

He is 5 weeks old Bea, & I have him inside now, he has about 85% of his feathers, & he is eating millet seed so that is a bonus. Will check his crop in the morning to see how he is going, he should be warm enough, only really warm feathery thing I could find was my "feathers" scarf (Laughing out loud), hopefully it'll remind him of his Mum. I too this photo a few days ago, first time I found him on the avery floor. Will enlist the aid of my daughter for feeding if it is necessary, she is always rescuing something furry or feathery.

aww bless him :P ..... Id bring him in too. As you say its getting cold at night and if he falls out early evening then hes in trouble!!....failing that send him over to me !! :D

Hi Bev, You have done the right thing by brining her in. Very cute.... and at 5 weeks she should eat herself. Don't expect the crop to be as huge as mum fills it but you should feel a small ball in there. :P Good luck Bev and keep us posted .
