Posted June 6, 200519 yr Hi All We have a pair of budgies which laid 7 eggs about 2 months back, none of the eggs hatched and much to our dissapointment we found all the eggs smashed. Soon after the pair laid another 7 eggs, on which they are currently sitting. They are the only pair in a cage and we keep them indoors. In our estimate it has been about 18 days since they laid the second batch of eggs and we think these may be infertile too. We have not done any candle test etc because we do not want to disturb them. Are the pair we have just not good parents is it quite normal for them to fail at breeding the first couple of times? Also how long does it take an egg to hatch ? We have heard it is 18 days. Is this correct? Thanks for all the help. :angel1: Parth & Sara
June 6, 200519 yr There are many facotrs that can cuase a breeding to fail - such as the hen or male in in the right condition to breed, age, succuss of the mating. 18 days is the average they can hatch anywere from day 17-23. They hatch the same as when they where laided every two days apart so if you have counted to 18 from the first egg you have week or so until the last one is due to hatch. Keep waiting for a while yet. I have to ask- you have read alot about breeding and careing of chicks and parents before starting this right? Just seems this is an easyish question.
June 6, 200519 yr Also bear in mind you do not know which egg was laid when so after 23 days and none have hatched do not take them away because some may still hatch! I would leave all the eggs for as long as you left the first lot just to make sure and as this is only her second lot seven is alot for them to handle the first time so perhaps it is best that some do not hatch! Dont worry about them being indoors we used to breed budgies indoors and even traveled by driving from germany to england with babies in the box once(got a ferry as well (Laughing out loud) before anyone says how did you drive over the sea!) I am a great believer that patience pays off where budgies and breeding are concerned Good Luck
June 6, 200519 yr Hi Vicky! Thanks for your reply. Regarding breeding experience, we have researched a bit and decided that patience is the best way to go. We have kept the eggs as last time the parents smashed them themselves. We are hoping you are right and at least one of the seven hatch. We will be very happy with that... We feed the birds with lots of calcium and celery and they also like grapes. So healthwise they are okay. Thanks heaps for your help and it is really good to have advise from people who have had success in breeding. Sara and Parth

Whether the eggs hatch or not is not as important for us, as is making sure our budgies are in good health. We are waiting with fingers crossed to see whether any of the eggs hatch. Thanks Parth & Sara
