Just recently I witnessed my budgie eat his dried out droppings. I have never seen him do this before!! How do I get him to stop!?? why is he doing this!?

Clean out his cage twice a day. That way there wont be as much poop for him to eat. It's quite normal for them to eat some of their poop however, so I wouldn't worry too much.

dOES HE HAVE ACCESS TO A MINERAL BLOCK AND A CALCIUM BLOCK AND FRESH VEGGIES? i BELIEVE THAT SOMETIMES ANIMALS (INC BIRDS) WILL DO THIS BECAUSE THEY ARE NEEDING A MINERAL OR VITAMIN BOOST. iTS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE, BUT IT MAY JUST BE AN IDEA TO CHECK OUT HIS DIET

If he has a good diet, then as Budgie babe says, its probably not much to worry about, and be hot on hygiene; but keep a close eye on him for the next week or so.

my too too eats his poop thats sometimes on the window sill... dirty sod.

 

but then again he isnt normal as he hates the mirror and cutie :S

I've also seen them do it simply because it provided a spot of contrast to peck at; much like most budgies peck at almost anything that is in contrast to the area it is sitting upon. Freckles, crumbs, debris, you name it. I doubt it's indicative of poor nutrition unless it is a persistent and deliberate habit that continues day after day. Haphazard pecking is nothing to get too concerned about.

I've noticed that too.

 

On the flip side, that instinct REALLY helps when trying to get them to eat new foods! When I was first introducing my birds to new things I'd spread bits of pasta and veggies out on the table (usually chopped into tiny pieces) and since the table was smooth and flat they'd pay a lot of attention to the bits of food. And they ate it pretty quickly. I think they *really* enjoy finding food in unexpected places as well.

Sunny used to do that too, and he eventually stopped. We also have bars at the bottom of the cage where the poop falls through and onto paper underneath. This is a GREAT way to prevent budgies from eating their droppings.

My budgie Charlie eats his poo continually..he luvs 2 b in kitchen flying around..he also has a budgie gym which is also in kitchen us toys & tray of pellets on windowsill..he has his freedom 2 go between kichen & lounge where his cage is..so has not unhappy & communicates with me thro the dy..he has his freedom from approx 1 o'clock til 6 ish. He eats fresh veg & fruit. So why is he eating his poo still?!!!

I find my four budgies to eat or at least pick at droppings if they do not get millet spray within 30 minutes of searching for it. Im trying to get them onto Harrisons excellent budgie Fine Pellets. They are not going easily to that !?

Hi, I’m new to here. I have two young budgies (under 3months we think as have not had first Molt). They eat Harrison’s high potency food, have mineral and cuttlebone but recently they are starting to eat their droppings? Any advice on why as the food they are on is a good food. They won’t entertain any sort of fruit and veg no matter how much we try ?
