Posted June 4, 200520 yr I got lulu (as a baby) about 6 weeks ago. Whilst I didn't notice a problem on the day of purchase, ever since, her droppings have been caking onto her feathers, and the feathers seem sparse around her vent. I've been to the vet a fortnight ago (I'd previously asked the pet shop about it, and they didn't sem concerned so I didn't take her straight away, wish I had now!) and they thought it might be worms, so I've tried to worm her. However, I don't know if I managed to get the worming solution into her!! She doesn't seem any better, and whilst most of the time she seems to be happily chirping away, I have noticed her at the bottom of the cage a bit which I'm a bit worried about. If it is infact worms that she has, how do I tell? the vet only guessed... I'm bringing her back to the vet tomorrow, but ideas of what could be going on would be appreciated. Please help, i just want my little lulu to get better!
June 4, 200520 yr my budgie had exactly what you are describing, the poo sticks to the outside of the vent normally because she is obviously not well and the poo can become runnier. sitting on the bottom of the cage is not a good sign normally. My budgie had all these signs, and if shes fluffed up too that means shes trying to reserve her body heat as they dont keep their temperature at a normal rate when theyre sick, see HEREfor some ways to keep her wartm and happy til you can get to a vet Hope she gets better Edited June 4, 200520 yr by cockabudgie
June 4, 200520 yr It could be anything but I doubt it's worms. You need to have her seen by an *avian* vet. They will do tests instead of guessing. Budgies have a lot of very common symptoms that could mean just about anything so guessing is pretty futile. It won't get you anywhere unless tests are actually run that can show what the problem really is. I hope you're able to find a good avian vet and get her fixed up soon!

June 15, 200520 yr Hi thanks for the advice etc I've spent an age waiting for test results, so far all they've been able to tell me is that she has too much bacteria in her but they don't know what type and are still in the process of growing it to be able to treat her properly. In the mean time she is on antibiotics. She seems in good spirits, despite being on her own (incase my other bird gets sick too) and is enjoying the luxury of having her own heater keeping her cosy and warm. However, the problem is still there with her droppings stuck to her feathers. As she tries to clean herself she ends up plucking the feathers out. I think perhaps I should try clean her myself so she doesn't resort to this, yet I don't know how. I tried warm water with a soft cloth but it did not work. Any other ideas?? Bethan
June 15, 200520 yr Hi Bethan I had a sick budgie too and a breeder told me to try cold tea for a day it is an old remedy that can help sick budgies. If you have your bird on antibiotics them also give it some probiotic this helps to balance the bacteria in the gut. With regards to the dirty vent if you put your bird in a shallow bath of warm water to losen the dirt on it's vent then use a soft cloth or cotton bud you should not do any harm as most show budgies are washed and hairdried before shows to brighten up their colours so it should be fine for your burd but keep it warm and dry off the excess water before you put it back in the cage. I hope this helps Angela Edited June 15, 200520 yr by angel121
June 15, 200520 yr You should aim to just soften the droppings that are stuck on so that really means to apply the warm water and wait a few minutes to let it soften, you may need to keep repeating this. Can you handle your bird o.k.? Try also a cotton bud moistened with warm water. julie
