First Baby!

Hi, I am new to all this! Have my first home baked baby who is about 4 weeks old. Today found him out of the nest...left him....fell off the perch landed on the floor, mum and dad both looked very concerned. Eventually I decided to put him back into the nest as he is too young to fly. Mum is back in the nest with him now. Have I done the right thing? When should he leave the nest? Did he leave or did mum kick him out?

Dooley..............

I know nothing about breeding, but I would suggest ether lowereing the nest box or putting plenty of bird-safe padding underneath in case there's a repeat performance. Watch him closely, if the parents ARE fed up of him, the may start plucking and attacking him, and he's far too tiny to cope with that.

Dooley, Ive moved this topic to breeding tips for you, as its breeding related, and hopefully you will get a more specialised response in here :P.

By the way, WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!!!!!!!

around the age of 4 weeks they start to explore the outside world but as you have seen not use very stable on their feet.

This might be a good idea becuase you don't want the little guy hurting himself and moving the nest may upset the mom, but you could also do this.

That's how my 2 babies first started coming out of the nest. I lowered the nest to avoid injury and would just put them back in.

From what I've gotten from others here it perfectly fine to handle them at this age, I was holding mine from day 5 (for seconds at a time) then gradually I got more brave.

Good luck soon they'll be perching !!

My first one just came out of the box 20 minutes ago. It's not quite 4 weeks old (will be tuesday) He was fine walking on the bottom of the cage and then he started screaming a lot and mom and dad kept jumping around on the perches and on the ground with him so I stuck him back in the nest. At 4 weeks of age they are supposed to be coming out of the nest more and more often and learn how to feed themselves as well.

Putting him back was right - My eldest baby Dumpy came out of the nest and I put him back a week later he is now flying round the aviary happily and he is already loved up with a baby I bought three months ago - it is quite funny watching him go to his dad for food then goes to the other and feeds that!

Thanks all of you for your helpful advice and interest. I lowered the nest but hours later found Mum attacking baby. (She wants the nest back to herself to breed more I suspect!) Have removed baby from aviary and have him in smaller cage. He is snug and eating a littel bit of soaked seed and hand raising mix. He loves cuddles, spent most of today down my top! Visited dad who fed him thru the cage wire..very very sweet. Once again I hope I have done the right thing! Question: even thou he is eating a bit him self, how often should I feed him? (I have had 4 baby humans but this is my first baby budgie!!!!)

Regards.

You should put dad with him to feed him. 4 weeks is early enough to start leaving the box, but dad will feed him for about another 2 weeks and show him how to eat seed. :)

i agree with rainbow- dad should feed, I had to remove mum when she attacked dad and dad fed both babies perfectly from 3 weeks on.

I agree with Rainbow to, the dad should feed the little guy. Just keep your eye on them and make sure he is a good dad.

good luck.

Crikey sounds like you have had a lot of trouble

Its not as easy as it looks breeding budgies but I have found it?s a case of learn as you go

I have had the best results by breeding my birds in separate cages with breading box attached that way they don?t have far to fall

Well all the best with your birds and have a nice day

I'm doing the same as hommer.

30 to 33 days to the approx time for fledging. But every bird is different. :P :fear
