Do you know how old he is.. Is he fluffed up at all......Is his poo normal or is it runny...

It may be he is pooped out..hes moved to a new home in new surroundings with a new person etc etc ...Try to post a few more details...

Mine stayed on the floor in a corner for a couple days but he was only 6weeks..still a baby :P:wub:

Hello

Thanks for replying so quickly

he around 12 weeks and yes he is fluffed up and yes poo is normal i think (greeny-black) but a bit watery. As i was writing this reply he has just climbed up to his perch and gone to sleep.

Lyn :bb:

thank you Trikkivix

Hi, and first of all, a warm welcome to the family :P

Poor little Joey, eh? sounds a bit under the weather to me. As trikivix said, what are his poops like, and does he look fluffed up? Its possible that a bit of shock has set in due to his new circumstances, and also, if he's very young, he could just be a bit worn out with his new lifestyle. Do you cover him up at night? I like my birds to get at least 10 -12 hours of darkness and quiet every night, and if its a baby, or a poorly bird, then at least 12-14 hours quiet and dimness (recuperation time).

Are you using any airfresheners, scented candles, shake and vac, febreze etc? These things unfortunately can play riot with a birds respiratory system, and soon make it quite ill. I'll advise you as I always advise anyone who has concerns over their bird, get him checked out by an avian vet as soon as possible. Its worth getting him wormed and checked for feathermites too while you're there. In the meantime, keep him quiet and rested.

Please let us know how he goes on?

Anne

oh, and your post is fine here, as it is a health concern matter, so its in the perfect place.

I agree with Chirpy.. Id take the little one to a vet...its always better to be safe than sorry.. These little critters do hide their illnesses very well so you can be easily decieved :P:wub:

Hi

I'm not quite sure how to write this but thought I'd update you on Joey. I made an appointment at the vets but sadly we didn't get him there in time, he died suddenly even though he was showing signs of improvement. I feel so bad that I didn't react quicker, I thought that maybe it was the events of Wednesday that may have effected him! We let him out of the cage and he had only been sitting on the bottom since he went back in, I really thought that perhaps he was spooked or something as he was eating and drinking normally and didn't show any other signs of being unwell. I would have posted this sooner but I couldn't put my words together and been feeling really down and guilty.

Hi Lyn

Im so sorry about Joey but please you mustnt feel guilty... You did seek help and guidance , you were concerned..to be honest I think he was unwell when you got him.. they can hide illness very well, its a self protection thing..if they look ill they look vunerable so they hide it... It is sad but we all feel for you Im sure..:D

Sorry Lyn :(

Don't you dare feel guilty sweetheart. How were you to know that he was sick earlier? Budgies are soo damn good at hiding their illness until its almost too late. Birds have such a strong fight mechanism, they just keep on going and going, even if their body is telling them to stop, they just don't as they will do naything to survive, until they are just not able to keep going anymore. Its a learning experience for you.

Symptoms to look for in a sick bird :

fluffed up, on the floor of the cage (normally when the bird is very very ill), runny droppings, nasal discharge and sneezing.

I only learnt these recently myself, and you may think back and realise your bird had some of these symptoms, but please do not beat yourself up over it, it is just a learning experience.

Take care of yourself and hopefully we will see you here with a new budgie friend soon!

Hello Lyn,

Sorry to hear your news, like Trickivix says I would imagine he was altready quite poorly when you got him.It can happen to any one of us,feeling guilty is a natural part of grieving but don't beat yourself up about it.

Take Care.

Julie

Hi all

Just want to thank you all for your kind words. I have thought about it and you are prpobably right about him being ill when we got him although he seemed a happy chappie and didn't show any sign of being ill until day three.

Thanks again for your help and support

Im so sorry for your loss Lyn, and is IS difficult to spot a sickness in a budgie, they do hide it so well. Often, by the time the bird 'looks' sick, it can be too far gone to help, but not always. Dont blame yourself, you sought help, your were prepared to take him to the vet, YOU CARED!!!!!!!

Give yourself a bit of time, thoroughly cleanse and sterilise the cage with an avian disinfectant (availale from most good pet supply stores) and seek out a breeder. (did your bird come from a shop? Shops rarely practice good quarantine procedures, and therefore often sell sick birds to the unsuspecting public, its just a quick and easy cash turn-over to them)

Open your heart to another little bird, but from a good breeder. If you have problems locating one, we should be able to help you out there. Im so sorry for your loss, but please accept what we are saying, its NOT your fault. You tried.

Blessings,

Anne

I am so sorry for the loss of your new budgie. Even though it will probably be difficult, you should let the store where you got your budgie know he was sick and has since died after a few days. If they are a responsible store they will have their remaining budgies seen by their avian vet. They may even offer to let you have another bird after they have verified the health of their remaining birds.

(((hugs to you)))

Hiya, im so sorry to read your text. I know how you feel, we bought a Rosella a few years ago, from what we thought was a reputable pet shop, she seemed happy and healthy no problems at all, then after 4 days she didnt seem herself, and so i phoned my vets at she was always at the bottom of the cage etc, it was actually the day before christmas eve, i rushed over to the vets with my 2 crying children holding her and talking and generally willing her to live, but literally as we walked into the vets room ,she passed away, it was the most upsetting thing to go through, the vet told us we had been sold a poorly birs, but as others have said, novices (if i dont sound too rude saying that) like us didnt notice any of the signs, we took her home gave her a kiss then wrapped her up, said a prayer (although were not really religious) but it seemed appropriate, then buried her, my son made her a cardboard stone for on top of her 'grave' with a peom that was absolutley heartbreaking. These pet shops are disgusting for selling people these poor little things, all theyre bothered about are their weekly takings not other peoples feelings. You must not blame yourself, you loved and cared for Joey, the best you could, i blamed myself for ages after with things like i should have driven faster etc, but nothing you could have done would have prevented it. I hope you get a new budgie soon to love and cherish!

Take care love
