Biggles won't leave his cage

I have been letting him hop on my finger to come out for some exercise.

Once he's out he seems very happy. He usually stays on the floor and investigates everything, but does have the odd stretch of his wings. When he starts falling asleep I gently lift him back to his cage.

Yesterday I left the cage door open all day and he still didn't come out on his own. When I went in to get him about 4pm, he stayed out happily playing for about an hour.

Should I just leave him until he does come out on his own and should I only leave the door open for a short time before closing it?

Maybe he only wants to come out to be with you? So then he wouldn't want to just come out of his cage. Maybe he feels scared unless he's in his cage or with you....is he really attached to you??

Yeah Merlin doesn't come out unless I'm there. In fact these days he doesnt come out by himself at all. But we'll be working on that when he feels better ;)

I've only had him just over a week so don't think he's attached.

I think it's not a bad thing-it is still very early days and Sherbet doesn't come out on his own yet-in fact I'm using that to my advantage so that he associates my finger with having a good time!

As to leaving the door open, that's a personal thing. I wouldn't unless you know you can watch him all the time just in case he decides to venture out when you're not in the room and get into trouble somewhere. Just have it open when you're there with him.
