Posted May 22, 200520 yr Hello, One of our budgies, Dolly, has pooping problems. His poop does not always drops off, and collects around the vent. His droppings look fine, and his vent shows no dirtyness. This does not happen all of the time, but every few days it does, and it has been happening since we got him in December. He is very healthy otherwise. What do you think could be the cause of this?
May 22, 200520 yr its not normal for them to collect around the vent. collecting is an indication that the droppings are too wet. it could be a sign of a gastro intestinal infection so you need to get her checked by a vet. the vet might run a few tests as this has been going on for quite a long time. how come you have never got it looked at? im not critisising, i just wondered why you ask now if it has always been happening. it could be something you are feeding her? perhaps a certain fruit or veggie that doesnt agree with her? have you noticed a pattern appearing after feeding a certain food? do you put any supplements in the water? sometimes supplements can cause bacteria in the water and cause stomach upsets. i use a probiotic given by my vet to help improve my birds immune systems - you have to disinfect and clean out the container every 12 hours otherwise the supplement goes off and could cause harm. just a few suggestions, hope she gets well soon. May 22, 200520 yr The poop is not watery. Its more like really goey, so it gets stuck to the feathers. Once it drops or if it does not collect, his vent feathers are very clean and white looking. If its normal, then why does he need to go to the vet? If he does need to go to the vet, I will take him for sure. I had asked in another forum before, and I cant remember exactly what was said, but we decided not to take him to the vet. He is very healthy otherwise, his eyes are clear and his dropping are the proper coloring. He eats a majority of seed, and some fruity zupreem pellets. And brocoli and celery (not enough though, my sister slacks in giving it too him so I give it to him.) What kind of tests would they do? would they be painfull?
May 22, 200520 yr its not normal for them to stick - thats why i think you should get him checked. at the very least at least you will know there is nothing wrong and it will put your mind at rest when peanut was ill my vet had to examie his crop. im not sure how they do this but i would imagine it is quite uncomfortable. they might do this if they think it is neccessary but i dont think they will as peanut was very seriously ill when they did this. (he had to stay overnight for them to do it). i think they might examine a sample of the droppings to check for any bugs. it sounds like a mild infection so probably just needs a few days of antibiotics to help settle his stomach. he might just be a little stressed (maybe moulting) and that could casue it? i always say though, if there is the slightest doubt in your mind that something isnt quite right it is always worth getting checked out. :oliveb:
