Transferable diseases to humans?

Featured Replies

Posted

I was just wondering if there was any diseases, viruses, parrasites, worms, illnesses that humans can catch from birds.... or also that birds can catch from humans....

Was just wondering because my 2 year old is always playing with the birds and the toys and i was thinking i hope they dont have anything he can catch... or pass on.

I always wash his hands after but i dont always catch him playing with them till he walks in with a bird ball or something in his hand and a biscuit in the other. cant always watch every move he makes...

please put my mind at ease........

thanks kindly Carmen...

There are some diseases that birds can pass to us (usually to very very young children, the elderly, or those with a weakened immune system).

Here's an article that says it much better than I can: http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww26eiv.htm

I heard that something called Chlamydiosis/ Psittacosis can affect humans. Here's a link to some info on a vet's site: http://www.birdvet.com.au/frame.htm

Actually, just follow the links on the site - Birdcare

in here though it says:

"Zoonotic diseases are diseases that are transmissable from animals to humans." but this is also can work the other way around, passing from humans to animals. but it doesnt mention any.
