What is the best way to bond with your new baby Budgie????

  • 2 weeks later...

i'd say just leave it alone on the first day or two as not to overwhelm it. as soon as it is settled in and eating, start teaching it to step up, do this away from it's cage. also make sure there aren't mirrors in the cage or those little plastic budgies. when it is comfortable sitting on your hand try walking around the house and spending time with it. if your budgie bites you when you want it to step up DO NOT JERK YOUR HAND AWAY FROM THE BIRD this will scare and confuse it. simply push your finger against it's belly until it steps up. be consistant with 1 term such as "up", "hop up", or "step up". its a good idea to clip wings during the bonding process, if you don't know how to do it please don't attept anyway, this could cause great harm to the bird

blood feathers are also known as pin feathers for those of you who are new owners, always look for them in your bird before clipping!! they carry their own blood supply and if they are cut YOUR BIRD CAN BLEED TO DEATH if a blood feather is cut it must be pulled out immediately. it is good to buy a blood clotting power with your bird incase an accident should occur with feathers or toenails!!!

 Well guys a lot has happened since my last post. Jacko and myself are best of buddies, I open his cage door and he jumps straight onto my shoulder, we walk around the house togeter, I have even introduced him to my dog Brandy, she is a 3 year old cocker spaniel, at first she wasn't to sure, but now they get on fine with each other.

Last night I was watching the footy show with Jacko and he snuggled into my neck and started chewing at my neck chain and nibbling my ear, he is so funny.

He flew onto the carpet and we laid together on the floor watching TV, he loves his little scratches behind the head.

It is amazing how things just took off, I just started taking him out of his cage and he naturally sat on my shoulder, now he loves it, he is very easy to pick up and doesn't mind being picked up.

Yahooooooo, I love my Jacko.

wish my bird would sit on my shoulder. i let him out the cage and he doesn't want to know me

okay

some birds are just nice and tame really easily like jacko

Wow, that sounds like my bird Chico!

Except 4 he'll fly around in the cage instead of climbing exactly 2 my shoulder!

turk was like that until he met pudding and hes still kind of tame now.

Now Cucu would climb onto my finger and then 2 my shoulder, but since they laid eggs he's really rough !!!!!!!!!!!!!

yea they get like that

U know how they say that once they mate they stay mean like that, I'm hoping Cucu doesn't but if he does I got his baby!!!!!

I mean like hopefully his baby will b the same, u know?

yea, thats kind of why i didnt want to breed the evil pudding

:vampire

Wasn't she mean to begin with?

(Laughing out loud)

exactly, she would be even worse :(

i think a bird's temperment is based completely on its experiences as a baby. the less stress the bird faces as a baby the more trusting and well tempered it will be and such

sure

I've had Tabbi for a little over a month now. She is finger trained, but when she gets on my finger. She jumps off and flutters around. What should I do? I want her to be like all the tame birds I've read about!

Just keep practicing with her. You are doing well if you have only had her for a month. It takes a long time to win trust from a bird. Praise her every time she steps on your finger (even if she hops right back off). You also might try giving her a treat (like millet) only from your hand as a training aid. Every chance you get, stop by her cage and talk to her. Practice step-ups in the cage as well as out. Good luck!

pudding might have been a great mum but if she wouldnt have been i couldn't have forgiven myself for the simple reason that i had doubts...oh well we'll never find out now willl we?

turk is exactly the same, and he is four years old nowits taken that long for him to trust me anough to sit on my finger-although recently he has been letting me stroke his chest whilst being on my finger.it just takes time

all are differenet for example my hen i have now will attack anything that she senses a heartbeat from-even turk sometimes-but my other hen i had before was perfectly tame by the age of 6mnths(preened my eys and lett you kiss her and scratch her head) all budgiesare different..
